My 2 year old daughter always calls me "mommy", but recently she worked out (all on her own) that if she calls me "mammietjie", her chances are exponentially higher to get what she wants!

Will that work for the rest of us, mammietjie? :D

Mom/Oma to my mom and first name/Opa for my step dad (Oma & Opa get whipped out when minimooks is around).

I didnt see my biological father for over 15yrs and have thankfully managed to avoid calling him anything in the last 2yrs. I wonder if he has noticed that I have not addressed him even once? Not out of malice, just out of 'wtf do I call you? '

SO calls his mom by her first name, although he does it out of affection he says. He reverts back to 'Mom' when he is annoyed with her.

EDIT: we're white, 28 & 30 respectively.

Is it because of all my wrinkles ? :( :crying:

Plus, you dont get to talk. You joined the Graaf Reniet army when you were an infant. So, there's that.

I call my mom either mommy or Chelle (Her name is Michelle), I call my step dad by his name as they only recently got married, won't ever call him dad though.

My dad has ALWAYS been daddy. Step mom by her first name although she's been better to us than my real mom.

On the English side of my family, I've 2 aunts and an uncle. One is addressed by her name, she doesn't want to be called "Aunty x". Other aunt is addressed by a nickname for the same reason. My uncle is called "Uncle X". My grandparents are called granny and another nickname for my grandfather, I had bad ears as a child and what I called him stuck :D

On the Afrikaans side, however, everyone is oom en tannie. Ouma used to be called ouma, oupa died waaaaaaaaaaaaaay before my time.

I'm 23, half English, half Afrikaans.

Indian. Mom, and Dad or what the grandkids call him. My oldest son has taken to calling my husband and me by our first names when we don't respond immediately. If it happens when I'm near, he gets smacked upside the head.

As title suggests. Lets have it.
Bonus points, do you think calling your parents by their first name is a sign of disrespect

Age group and Culture would be appreciated in your answer

I call them Mom & Dad. I'm 26 and have no culture.

OT: I once hit on an older woman and she said I was too young for her so I started calling her Auntie afterwards.

Mom and Dad... calling your parents by their first names is weird.

+1

We are afrikaans. I call my mom "ma", and my dad "dad" (not "pa").

Rest of Family is oom/Tannie. Except for my dad's youngest brother "Andrew" and my mom's youngest sister... they are first name basis.

My father's name hasn't been used by anyone in years - since the 90s. He is called Pa or Father or Oupa or Boetie. I sometimes call him Oom Boetie. My mother is called Ma or mom or sir or mother or granny. My daughter calls me Dad or Father. She calls her mother mom or mother. We do not really use uncle or oom or tanie or aunty but my brother's kids address using oom and tanie. GF calls my parents by name or Mr/Mrs. I call her mother by name of tanie (but then I get wie's jou tanie).

I'm somewhere past 40, white, mixed English/Afrikaans.

Notice how this aunty doesn't mention her age.
