Do you get to work faster by driving faster or slow and steady.

As title states.
Me?

About the same, morning run is robot->robot so not much changes.
Afternoon is slightly faster as I take the freeway and I do push it quite a bit

How about yourself?
Does it matter?

How would slow and steady ever get you there faster than driving faster?*

The best you could do is the same.

*unless faster crashes.

Slow and steady, but always in the left hand lane. it's peaceful and uses less fuel. All of this helps to make my day more trouble free.

You should all try it:D

You are at the mercy of the robots and traffic. Less traffic would ensure you get over the robot(s) before it changes. The more traffic there is increases the chances of not getting over a robot in time and well....

Have tried both. Repeatedly because I initially refused to believe the results.

Push HARD in my pocket rocket (Opel Corsa OPC) vs drive like a pensioner and the time saving is between 5 and 8 minutes over a distance 16km.

Its NOT a significant enough time saving to warrant the dangers associated with pi$$ing off the populous and risking life and limb. So I stick to something between Miss Daily and Mr Schumacher.

On 2 wheels however - the difference is MARKED. Even a slight increase in pace on 2 wheels equates to a MAJOR difference of "on the road time". The inherent dangers of 2 wheels are themselves debatable and probably best saved for another thread.

Only time its faster for me is if leave early or late. Driving faster does not actually make much of a difference other than 2-5 min plus add risk of fines, accident etc not that i drive slow.. but i find that since i stick to the limit, the time taken to get to any place is pretty consistent and only traffic + route is the deciding factor

5-8 minutes is a massive difference over 16km.

Bumper to Bumper through Gillooly's interchange on the N3. Its takes a LOT of "pushing" to achieve this. It's really not worth it.

Well if the intial time is 2 hours, then 5-8 minutes less doesn't mean much as you're standing still all the time, and you won't be able to drive any faster anyway, as traffic would be the limiting factor.

I assumed the scenario was one where you can actually make a difference by driving faster, which would be no more than 30 minutes on 16km. Otherwise it's a moot point.

This.

Tested this many times - the 'time' gained is not worth the effort, aggravation and risk.

Kids play a game in car - choose a 'rusher' and then see how long it takes us to catch up - usually within 3 to 4 traffic lights, sometimes we 'lose' the 'rusher' and then spot them getting out of their car when we pull into the mall parking lot :D - so much for time saving when they get caught in the foot traffic on the down escalator :D

I stick to speed limits as much as I can because I cannot afford any fines.

I still don't understand how slow and steady could ever possibly get you there faster than driving faster?

The real question is this:

If you're traveling in a car at 120kmph will you get home faster than a guy with a truck traveling at 120?

No, the truck is heavier and has more wind resistance, and and..... oh wait.

Robots. Time or Speed doesn't factor for me. Leave at 6,7 or 8.
Still takes 20 minutes to get to the office.

OR

Wind resistance

The "elastic band effect". You race off at 150-170km/h while Doris plods along at 100km/h. You get to the robot before her. She catches you up within a minute or two. She stops 5 cars behind you. You race off at 100km/h and she dawdles along at 50km/h. You get stopped at the next red light. She doesn't because shes driving slow and hits all the green lights in succession (because SA robots are timed as ONLY an inept government could). This keeps extrapolating. You race off. She catches you a few minutes later (albeit behind 5 or 7 cars). And after a 20 minutes drive home... in reality she parks her car only 5 minutes after you. Except its your clutch and tires that are smoking and your life that was on the line numerous times during the drive.
