Do you have a dashcam in your vehicle?

Have you found any particular brand to work the best?

Yes, cheapy dashcam is better than 100 arguments of he said, she said.
still wonder if its ever going to become mandatory in SA, given how badly people in SA drive and how corrupt police are.

Definitely been thinking about it but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well sometimes it doesn't have to on the dash or even in the vehicle......

SA made Number 1 on Daily dose of Internet, 1.6mill views in one day

Yes, I have a cheapy.

The problem is they don't make dashcams for the SA sun and I don't want to stick it permanently on my windscreen because I replace my windscreen every year almost........and don't want to have to replace the dashcam as well.

But a cheapy is better than nothing.

I have used my cam after a lazy cop accused me of skipping a red light. Submitted the footage and got the fine dismissed.

Car has 7 cameras built in, and dumps footage to USB if there's an accident or you hit the hooter.

Yes, lots of sovereign drivers on the roads that obligate the necessity for a recording device.
Also helps if I have to re-evaluate certain situations that occurred on my journey to see whether I can/should handle similar situations differently in the future.

In SA that would be a lot of dumping :p.
I just got a cheapie from Temu, footage isn't too bad, not spectacular but enough to show evidence if needed. It's only really shown it's worth once when a guy was driving like a chop and cutting and weaving in and out of traffic, cut me off I narrowly missed rear ending him and hit the hooter as a reflex. He climbed out his car, I just pointed at the dash cam and he got back in and sped off.
Could be the dashcam, could be cause he realised I was 194cm, yes I may drive a small car :)

Any recommendations available from a mainstream retailer for someone on a budget?

Why not look at Temu? honestly unless you're going up to the really expensive they'll all be relatively the same.

I had one of these put in my Duster. A year down the line, I can recommend it. Good picture quality too. It permanently records front and rear and is so sensitive that just slamming the boot shut a bit vigorously would make it record and 'protect' the file. It records bumps when the car is parked too.

I have one of these :
Great video quality. And has help me more than once.

I bought one of these. Front cam, rear cam, CPL filter, hard-wiring kit and 4G module (for remote tracking, viewing and recording access).

Yes, both my and the wife's car for about the past 3 - 4 years. WORTH EVERY PENNY! For the cost of a little more than a tank of fuel it is very worth it. Was amazing to have in an accident I had were a taxi ran a broken light and hit me. Evidence made the no fault claim effortless.

Useful again for helping out a fellow driver in front of me in Sandton. A driver caused an accident by trying to go straight in the middle of 3 turn lanes hitting the car on his left that was turning in his turn lane. Happened just in front of me. I stopped and offered the driver the footage where they stopped just round the corner and the idiot that caused the accident was already trying to blame the other guy. Gave them both my phone number to request the footage as the moron demanded it too but I think he knew he was in the wrong as he never did contact me. The driver who was the victim was incredibly grateful though. Made his claim easy at least and shut up the Moron real fast.

About 3-4 times I have downloaded footage of funny or stupid crap that happened in front of me for the lols on various whatsapp groups. Like some idiots in a rear wheel drive BMW trying to show off who spun out and crashed into a wall. I laughed so hard at those idiots.

I think that corrupt cops are going to threaten with penalty points in future, so dashcams will probably be your greatest defence.
This is an excellent point. My dashcam records voices in the car. Can be removed from the video if you want but very useful if a corrupt cop is asking for a bribe even if he is not caught on video.
