Omw she is soooo cute!!!! Please tell me where you bought her! I went to that website you showed me, but they are not in SA, so where would I find a place that has ready made tanks for them? I am not as good as to build something like on your pictures, so I just want to buy a readymade one, and add water and the tarapin turtle.

PS: sorry for going off topic :)

haha :) Yes, I am in Cape Town. Can you recommend a pet store or place to get everything I would need? Where do I get the shrimps? Those frozen ones from Pick 'n Pay?

OMG!! You had a crocodile!!!!!! Can a person keep them in a tank? Are there miniature ones or what?

He was a juvenile, Nile croc.
Never keeping for longer than two months, he was a rescue, same as terry was.
People keeping them in the wrong settings.

No you really shouldnt keep them in tanks, but he needed a place to stay while we organized him a real home on a farm.

The little lady I have is a side necked marsh terrapin, she is illegal to non permit holders and you cannot get a permit. she was a rescue. some lady fund her and thought she was a tortoise. kept her in a box feeding her lettuce. by that time she was too old to go back into nature. It is sad tho, I know she is lonely and wants to get her **** on!

Your best option is looking for red eared sliders, but cape town is quite strict with their laws on keeping reptiles.
I will have a look around to see if I can find any info on shops in CPT that stock Exo-terra products. You could most probably ship it in tho, or down from JHB!

The shrimp she eats is dried shrimp, made by Sera fish products, this stuff is DIFFICULT to find. When I find it I often buy 6 months worth of it. But ja you can feed her, fish food, meats (RAW), Plants, snails, worms, bugs, fish.

Aah ok. I was thinking it might be difficult to have a crocodile at your house, I mean they need a river and stuff. And they grow big!! LOL

Oh ok, thank you for the info! Shame, poor thing, keeping her out the water so long!! Glad she did not die!! Hmm I like the look of your one. Like almost like a real turtle baby, but the other terapins are like black yes? I saw the pictures, but I like the look of your one. Is there other baby water turtles that I can get that looks more similar to yours? Maybe a rescue one also?

Ah ok, well I can give it fish and steak and stuff if I cant get the shrimps. But first I need a tank and a terapin turtle. I will scour the internet a bit and see what I can find, but will ask your advice first before I buy something illegal.

Turtles and terrapins are like crocodiles and alligators! they are different.

Some cool terrapins to look at are:

Turtles get huge!
Terrapins are more of a smaller species!

buy red ear
Not sure if it legit tho.

To be honest i wouldn't even bother with that link, you need to find a pet store(exotic) close to where you stay. They should be able to tell you about the legalities(as Stoner said Cape Towns rules are different). So the best bet is to google for some pet stores or look up some in the phone book. Hopefully you can come across one where the people actually know what they are talking about and they can give you solid advice.

More often than not they will also sell start up kits for this type of thing. The one thing though is it looks like you are wanting a plug-and-play kit! In my experience you cant really do this, you need to get your hands a bit dirty to be able to give you animal a comfortable place to live, as is you are already removing them from its environment so the least you can do is give it a comfortable home. There will be many peoples "builds" online, and some may require very little work other than buying a couple things others like Stoners will require a lot of DIY work.

So if you dont feel like reading that, i would google a bit about there habitat and peoples custom builds(see if its something you are willing to put a bit of effort into) and then go down to a pet store who will be able to supply you not only with the "pet" but also be able to give you solid advice, i would rather pay a little at a pet store where the person knows what they are speaking about that get something of gumtree and end up with something illegal, or with problems etc! Also check what maintenance these animals require and see if its something you are willing to do on a regular basis!

Yep i understand not many girls like to build things etc! But good luck with your little journey, im sure you will have fun along the way! Exotic shops stock all kinds of things so you can probably get away with just buying things pre-made items that you could adapt for your little creature!

Again good luck :) Be sure to post pics if you ever do get around to it!

Here is some useful info with regards to living and buying a terrapin! Just scroll down to 5th and 6th heading!

"heheheee, okay"
