My rude awakening came in 2018 on a trip to Mauritius. We had just finished shopping on what we thought we'd need for our week stay. I was at the checkout with my wife picking up a few last things. I started unloading and the cashier looked at me and said "Bag?" Puzzled I looked at her and said "No." meaning I do not have a bag. She now seemed irritated and just exclaimed "Bag!" and she rang one up at the delightful price of R50. Turns out she was asking me where mine was, not if I wanted to buy one - as we are so used to here in South Africa. The second rude awakening came shortly after as the newly purchased bag along with all the stuff she scanned started piling up and I looked around seeing here it is a pack your own bag affair. Checking out therefor became a two man opperation, no more "I'm just going to quickly get .... while you checkout."
Since that trip I always take my expensive Mauritius shopping bags with, and I always pack my own bags. I have also started to take back my own trolley to the shop in the cases where I needed a trolley to haul it all to the car.
We are far too lazy here in South Africa.
Sidenote; Those bags are bigger and stronger than the crap we buy here. I have on numerous occasions put 6x2L cooldrink bottles in one bag and it would carry the weight without any damage. They also hold up well in the washing machine too. Sadly after 5 years of having three such bags I lost one because I was not paying attention at Spar. I started unpacking, placing all 3 bags in front. Once done I moved round to take over the packing from a clearly very distracted cashier. Normally if I do not use all three bags the last one gets chucked into one of the bags being used. I did check when picking up my 2 bags but did not see the third one and assumed it was in one of the full bags. It was not. Down to two bags now and two additional crappy local ones from Woolies,
