Much as I detest the current fiat currency regime, there's a backing to government-issued fiat currency that no altcoin can have: the ability of governments to raise revenue through tax, today and in the future.

Btw, Bitcoin is currently hovering around $3042 and dropping ...
Governments print more money it's not backed by anything.

Fiat has a shelf life of 30 years according to statistics.

The average life expectancy for a fiatcurrency is 27 years, with the shortestlife span being one month. Founded in 1694, the British pound Sterling is the oldest fiat currency in existence. At a ripe old age of 317 years it must be considered a highly successful fiatcurrency. However, success is relative.
