Hi there

If you use over 500GB of ADSL data per month, can you please PM me with answers to the questions below?

We often report on the biggest bandwidth users in South Africa, and would like to do a follow on article which gain some insight into what high end users do on their ADSL connections.

These answers will be completely anonymous, and we actually do not want to know your name or any other personal information. All we want are honest answers about your Internet usage.

It will be great if you can provide answers to the following questions:

  1. Can you tell us what you use most of your bandwidth for? Hence, what do you do that consume a lot of bandwidth/data (for example: do you download movies, TV series, online backups, office use etc)?
  2. Can you tell us what services you use if you download movies, TV series etc (hence BitTorrent, News servers etc)? Do you bypass shaping by your ISP?

Please PM your answers to me if you use over 500GB of data per month.

If you do bypass the shaping of your ISP, keep it to yourself. The last thing you want is your ISP finding out how you do it. ;)

On the contrary, tell RPM everything so he can let the ISP's know :D

I'm interested to know where people find time to "install" all those "linux distros" they download.

If you create a install script to download create and delete virtual machines it works quite well.

bought the humble bundle, that was a couple of GB's

BF4 is coming up, bought two more games on steam last night, so gaming alone has consumed a couple 100GB's and that is 100% legal.

We stream Netflix as well, so that is technically not allowed but I pay for the service.

Torrents are only a small portion of the monthly usage. It is very easy to use 100's of gigs on legal services.

Are you classifying a high-end user out of a business or individual perspective?

As an individual I'm small fry simply because I get all my "eat as much as you can" satisfaction utilizing 2 business ADSL lines at work to almost full capacity 24/7.

Not sure why people make a fuss over bandwidth. Just during school holidays my kid and his friends burned through 400GB of bandwidth - downloading games, playing online, youtube etc. (Contemplating of selling "wifi-vouchers" in the estate, since our connectivity and throughput beats everyone elses).

Online backup of a number of laptops (all 500GB), tablets and phones and then video-streaming, online gaming, Netflix etc will very quickly get to 500GB - right now on 290GB. If there was a proper/fast service of downloading movies via iTunes close to 1TB a month (HD) would be more of a target ;-)

Unfortunately my 2Mb line doesn't seem to be able to do 500GBpm. Otherwise we could talk...

Question missing: How many persons are using the connection

This relevant as one person doing 500 gb and household doing 500gb are two totally different things. Certainly not everyone is single or lives alone...

Valid point.

Also: business or personal use?

and do you depend on a reliable high speed connection
surely if you are downloading 500gigs a month you have enough content that 3 days SEACOM breakage isn't a problem so in the event of such a thing you understand that your connection is the first to end up heavily shaped and provided your ISP doesn't disclaim doing so throttled.

Funny thing is, I have been gradually upgrading my line speed over the last few months and my usage in actually decreasing.

Went from 4MBit -> 10Mbit -> 20Mbit.

When I was on 4Mbit I often pulled over 300GB. Last month since I have 20Mbit my usage was around 200GB and this month my usage is 200GB at the present time.
