Does 5G phones also have reception (calls/data usage) in non-5G areas?

As title says, this feels like a dumb question, but the dumbest question is the one not asked.

Do 5G phones 'work' in non-5G areas? Can they still connect to the network even if there is only a 4G or lower network?

All android phones that have 5G are backwards compatible with 4/3 and 2G.
