The high cost of bandwidth in South Africa means that many local websites are hosted internationally. Even Government seems to think international may be better.

Its typical.

I noticed the Bluehost thing on eNatis awhile ago, and even better, the site is hosted on a shared server because the exceeded their CPU usage limit once or twice and I got a generic error message.

Bluehost is about $7 a month for shared packages too, they're not exactly splashing out. :D

But in SA it would be a lot more, so hey they are not wasting our tax money on local hosting

How many hundreds of millions did they spend on eNATIS though? At least get a dedicated server so you don't run into problems.

does it matter? world wide web = earth.

* I understand the "support local business/infrastructure" thing. Just asking.

It just doesn't really make much sense to host overseas if 95% of your traffic is going to be local, how many Americans are going to use eNATIS? The only reason its done is because of the extortionate prices here, which is the point that's being made I think.

I know. And in theory I guess if the servers are only 200kms from your computer, they might load pages faster than if they were 8,000kms away I guess. Just my guess though.

In the land of the bastardised internet it might matter. You should be able to access any government site even if you are capped internationally.
