Does one need 3rd party firewall (Windows)

Since Windows Vista, and now Windows 7 I have not been using 3rd party firewall applications. I mostly run my PC and notebook behind my router firewall with of course Windows firewall enabled.

However Windows built in firewall did not ask for permission for network access for the majority of application I've installed, which is insecure straight away. Therefore asking the question is a more secure firewall recommended?

Is it necessary to have a 3rd party firewall such as Comodo, Zone Alarm or does the built in firewall do a good job?
I'm personally not too sure.

I never even bothered with them in the XP days. Never had a problem... ever.

Windows firewall by default will block unsolicited incoming traffic. So this won't really apply to programs that you have installed. Outgoing traffic is generally not a problem unless your PC is infected with a RAT in which case your antivirus or anti-malware should have detected anyway. I find that all 3rd party firewalls are annoying to say the least and now rely solely on the Windows inbuilt one. Your best defense is to keep your antivirus, OS and Internet programs up to date.

You do not *need* it. I'm running comodo though because I'm a control freak. Also like the "View Active Connections" window on comodo.
