Does the average South African even understand the concept of Democracy?

It's the first day of school and we have people burning tyres and trucks on the highway disrupting traffic presumably protesting service delivery early this morning. Just now got word they back at it again in the last half hour.

And these are the people who presumably voted overwhelmingly ANC

I bet most protesters (or sheep) in this country don't even know what they're protesting. They're just doing it because they don't have anything better to do with their lives and because "protests" and burning and looting stuff are the in things to do in this protest capital of the world.

Any excuse not to work.

The use of whitewall rubber for tire has been traced to a small tire company in Chicago called Vogue Tyre and Rubber Co that made them for their horse and chauffeur drawn carriages in 1914.

Early automobile tires were made of pure natural rubber with various chemicals mixed into the tread compounds to make them wear better. The best of these was zinc oxide, a pure white substance that increased traction and also made the entire tire white. However, the white rubber did not offer sufficient endurance, so carbon black was added to the rubber to greatly increase tread life. Using carbon black only in the tread produced tires with inner and outer sidewalls of white rubber. Later, entirely black tires became available, the still extant white sidewalls being covered with a somewhat thin, black colored layer of rubber. Should a black sidewall tire have been severely scuffed against a curb, the underlying white rubber would be revealed; it is in a similar manner that raised white letter (RWL) tires are made.

Democracy is a farce, especially in a nation such as ours where there are several different cultures and languages.

As for the Socrates 'hated' democracy quip, it was more his disdain that anybody could vote vs. only people of rational mind and thought should vote.

In Book VI, Socrates points out the “flaws of democracy by comparing a society to a ship.” If you were going on a sea voyage, “who would you ideally want deciding who was in charge of the vessel, just anyone, or people educated in the rules and demands of seafaring?” Unless we wish to be obtusely contrarian, we must invariably answer the latter, as does Socrates’ interlocutor Adeimantus. Why then should just any of us, without regard to level of skill, experience, or education, be allowed to select the rulers of a country?

The grim irony of Socrates’ skepticism, de Botton observes, is that he himself was put to death after a vote by 500 Athenians. Rather than the typical elitism of purely aristocratic thinking, however, Socrates insisted that “only those who had thought about issues rationally and deeply should be let near a vote.” Says de Botton, “We have forgotten this distinction between an intellectual democracy and a democracy by birthright. We have given the vote to all without connecting it to wisdom.
Of course, how the hell do you determine a test if someone can vote on voting day that they possess the right amount of wisdom/rational etc.?

Probably impossible and very subjected, so were stuck with every village idiot thinking having a vote.
