Hello fellow MyADSL users,

My dad wants to set-up email accounts in such a way that even if we change ISPs, it won't make us change our email accounts. Something like [first name]@[surname].co.za

E.g.
[email protected]
[email protected] etc.

I do not want something like this: http://www.webafrica.co.za/products/email_hosting/

Can't I just buy a domain name for a once-off fee and then simply use the email addresses that come with it?

That's the best way to do it. Choose a domain, host it somewhere you're happy with (if you're concerned about bandwidth, then choose a company with local servers -- like Hetzner -- so that you won't be using up your international bandwidth to send and receive emails.)

Then you'll never have to worry about being tied to an isp sto avoid losing your email address(es).

Hi Dominic,

Unfortunately domain names do not come with a once-off fee as renewal fees are expected each year, neither do most domain names offer a mailbox feature (.co.za for instance don't) - unless you opt for .za.net or similar free domain name.

Certain registrars offer the ability for the user to create a certain amount of mailboxes for free, however this is not the norm, as a domain sold is simply that - the domain with nothing extra in most instances.

I hope this clears things up and if you need any help, please feel free to contact me.
