Evening internet people,

I need to transfer account ownership of a domain name from Hetzner to another company that are able to "own" it.

I've cancelled hosting for a domain name with Hetzner, but they refuse to maintain the contact/technical details if the DNS changes. (The domain was registered through them). The host I want pointing to are yanks so it can't be transferred to them, SO, my question is, who can I get to "host" the domain here and just point it to the correct name servers?

I think MWEB (@ least old tiscali) will host the domain name for you, they use to charge about R60 per annum to do this.

They will create the record on their DNS servers, then send a ticket to co.za to request transfer which Hetzner will need to accept.

You will also need to tell the new host where you want everything to point ie. Mail Records, WWW & FTP Records ....

Thanks mccrack, will try them.

PS. if I remember correctly, you're a cricket fan; any (free) boards out there you could recommend?

dog I think I'm misunderstanding you.

With a website you have:

1) Domain Name - Owned by you and registred at a registraar (eg: godaddy, enom, co.za)
2) DNS Server - server which translates your domain name to an IP, usually hosed with website, sometimes outsourced.
3) Web Server - where the site actually sits.

Which are you talking about #1 or #2 that you need done ?

BlobNow,

Domain was registered through Hetzner, owned by me (well, by the people I'm doing this for). Site was hosted there, but now I am moving it to an overseas host. Hetzner are the ones who point the domain name to the correct name servers. They won't do it because the site won't be hosted with them anymore. (It's a tacky practise on their part, other hosts have no problem with that.)

So they want the domain transferred to the new host. Can't be done as the new hosts are American, it's a .org.za name.

So I need somebody to "host" the name and point it to the correct name servers.

If it's a org.za domain, then you need to go to that registrar http://www.org.za use their template to change the DNS servers.

With those guys the domain will still be registered via org.za but now you need to find a home for the DNS. I would recommend www.dnsmadeeasy.com I run all my sites using them and have just moved all our company sites there too. It's dirt cheap U$30 per year and lets you handle 20 domains on that account. I've been using them for about 3 years now with 0% downtime so far.

Also if the domain name has not got rank and has not been marketed a lot as yet I would recommend signing up for a .com domain for U$7 p/a.

Ofcourse this is all based on an assumption that you have some sort of a budget, if this however is NFP type stuff and not overly busy let me know and I'll host the DNS for you for nada on my dnsmadeeasy account.

to update the domain you need to submit an update request ... if it is with .co.za then here is the url - http://co.za/Update_gen.php
type in the domain name and it will list all the detail.
you need to get 2 dns servers from your yankie host. be careful here co.za wants those dns servers to have reverse dns setup ie. name to ip and ip back to name.

once you have the server addresses you can make the necessary changes to your record and send it in plain text to coza-admin-at-co.za they inturn will ask the current domain contacts if they approve of the change this would inlcude yourself as you are the owner. accept the changes then coza's world wide wait 24-48hrs before changes take effect.

remember you have to configure email addresses at the new host so you do not lose mail. your mail client will most prob also need some changes

if you still need help ... our domain management fees are R100

drowssap, so if I give you R100 you will make this problem go away? You will host the name and bill the relevant party yearly? Or not?

Believe it or not, my "profession" is web development. Administrative bollocks I'd rather pay for.

bwana,

I was under the impression they can't hold .org.za names. Could be wrong.

On a side note, I'm well impressed by the vBulletin board package. I've written my own, used PHPBB and SMF, but this one rocks.

drowssap, please do not take this personally, but when I look at the home page of a website, and there are spelling mistakes, it immediately puts me off. The message that is conveyed is that you do not give attention to fine detail, so that is the kind of quality a customer can expect. Just trying to help :)
