Don’t tell me what I can do with my data – expert

Throttling, blocking are just 2 examples of how they dictate how you use it, and how they limit what services you access.

You are made aware of those restrictions when buying those home uncapped accounts. Not so with mobile data.

“Mobile networks don’t complain about YouTube which consumes a lot of data.”

It's about those guys being butthurt that they can't extort those ridiculous sms and voice costs from the user anymore...and now they're doing everything in their power to keep their filthy fingers in the cookie jar.

As far as I'm concerned they have done it to themselves.
They have overcharged for SMS's for years, well now the market has found an alternative!

The networks are getting exactly what they deserve. And by the way that's what a network is supposed to be a "dumb pipe"

Dom gave an excellent talk today.

The point he raised - and as discussed in this article - is rather one of net neutrality and not regulation.

I fully agree with the NN stance - it's your data and you do with it what you want. We do not manage any traffic at this point in time but can see that prioritisation based on traffic type (video over torrents, for example as the DSL guys do today) might become a requirement in the future.

With how much you charge for data I doubt there's going to be a need any time soon. ;)

As far as I see it, it is something like this.

Yes, there is revenue loss for the SPs due to people using instant messaging services - which is actually nothing new. However, there must have been an increase in revenue for total bandwidth usage, it is fact that people have become more data hungry over the internet. Movies, series, music, PC games have gained a massive movement for distributing over the internet - seems as though console games are well on their way here too.

So please Vodscum and EmptN, do us all a big favour STFU now already while we continue to fill your greedy hands with our hard earned cash. We pay you for data, how we use it has f***all to do with you. If someone wants to use it to go and buy cocaine on the darkweb, then so be it. It is not their job to police or dictate how data is used.

Cull is right on point here, this is more a topic of net neutrality than anything else. Screw this one up and good bye open internet in the future as we know it.

By the time that VC data gets cheap enough, Telkom will have a lot more market share and products and such, you are sleeping VC, you are going to miss the bus!

I often wonder what it would take for people in major city centers to say screw mobile operators lets create our own data networks and run as an NPO or from donations.

Think like the WUG's but on a larger scale.

People are buying data bundles to use whatsapp and facebook, so i really dont know what the issue is.

WhatsApp voice erodes the NO's voice revenue.

WhatSApp messaging erodes the NO's SMS revenue.

Surely they knew this was bound to happen 10 years ago and they knew sweet bugger all could be done about it.

We had instant messaging a long time ago, I remember using ICQ in 1998.

But nothing has taken off as well as Whatsapp has. They were clever using phone numbers. It HAS reduced turnover for VC and MTN.

They are going to lose even more turnover if they manage to regulate it.
