Re-read the story. If Maddow got Punk'd with a fake document and said "my bad", then there wouldn't be anything to talk about. But the fact that Maddow is now trotting out conspiracy theories when her own work conclusively debunks her own claims is sloppy at best, and outright disinformation and lies at worst. Either way, it deserves derision and contempt.

Yeah, 'cos media being sent information that can later be weaponised and used to discredit and marginalise them isn't a problem at all. Also, if you think this particular WH is above all that you've been at the Cool-Aid too long. :erm:
She says her team are working on who sent her the fake... If she finds out, I guess you'll be jumping on the MSNBC better not dox 'em bandwagon.

EDIT: And as for trotting out conspiracy theories... Don't be bringing no Fox knife to an MSNBC gun fight.

Nonsense.

Let me get this straight, the timestamp from the document sent to Maddow has the exact same creation time as the Reality Winner leak, and Maddow STILL wants to claim that this information was not simply a cut-and-paste job that any idiot on the internet with some photoshop skills could have pulled off, and you STILL want to get all uppity about it instead of admitting what a disgusting own-goal this is?

But yeah, I'm sure it's more reasonable to conclude that some organised campaign to discredit the media is underfoot instead of the media simply tripping themselves up the whole time.

So you're honestly telling me you can see that whole clip while knowing that the central piece of "evidence" used to justify all the conclusions is bogus, and not see a problem with it?

You honestly think that after all this time, with all this anti-Russia hysteria which legitimately puts the entire planet at risk, it isn't time to start calling the MSM to account for their misbehaviour?

Yeah, no.

Also, NK is the one actually putting the entire planet at risk, but, more importantly, every time I've called out Russia as an aggressor here, you folk jump in to defend benign 'ol Vlad... Which is it? Are they a threat to world peace or not?

Yeah, no.
Instead of simply disagreeing with me, why don't you explain why?

Edward Snowden said:
Maddow's lawyerly defense of why her implication was wrong is disappointing. Such caution should come prior to raising alarm on national TV.

When the media's credibility is under attack, rushing stories out before checking facts and contacting the subject is hard to comprehend.

That said, journalism is hard and mistakes happen. When they do, as in this Maddow case, apologies should be frank and unequivocal.

When we start getting economical with facts, we lose. This important story was mangled by needlessly injected an unsupportable conspiracy.

Each time the media gets a prominent story wrong right now, I wince. More than egg on a famous face, it risks a generation's trust in news.

If our most famous journalists are so proud they can't admit to what is now an obvious error, how can they hope to hold the public trust?

Most folks can't read three different papers every day. If we don't set the highest standard, many give up and say the truth is unknowable.

That is the twilight of an age.

Snowden is saying exactly the same thing I am, and you're just dismissing it out of hand.

Also, NK is the one actually putting the entire planet at risk, but, more importantly, every time I've called out Russia as an aggressor here, you folk jump in to defend benign 'ol Vlad... Which is it? Are they a threat to world peace or not?
The souring of relations between the US and Russia because of a pack of lies deployed for domestic political purposes is the threat to world peace.

Edit:

Update: As part of the 2+ hour discussion between presidents Trump and Putin, AP reports that the Russian president asked for "proof and evidence" of Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 election which Russia denies. The request was made after Trump confronted Putin about Moscow's election meddling during their first face-to-face meeting in Germany on Friday, according to Rex Tillerson who was present in the meeting. The secretary of state told reporters afterward that Trump opened the conversation by “raising the concerns of the American people regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election.”

Putin once again denied Russian involvement, Tillerson said, but Trump “pressed” him on the matter “on more than one occasion.”

'President Putin denied such involvement as I think he has in the past,' he continued.

The Russians, speaking after the meeting, claimed that Trump accepted the denial - but Tillerson did not. Instead he said the issue may simply be an 'intractable disagreement.' Tillerson also said the Russians pushed Trump for proof and evidence of meddling, something which the president himself had doubted in public as recently as Thursday.

"The president at this point pressed him and felt like at this point, let’s talk about how do we go forward,' Tillerson said.

Trump and Putin agreed to explore a “framework” around which they can work to better understand these types of cyberthreats, the U.S. diplomat said.

“The two leaders agreed that this is a substantial hindrance on the ability of us to move Russian-U.S. relationships forward and agreed to exchange further work ?regarding commitments of noninterference in the affairs of the United States and our democratic process as well as those of other countries,” Tillerson said. “So more work to be done in that regard.”

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, who was in the meeting, said afterward that Trump accepted Putin's assurances that Russia didn't interfere in the election. But Tillerson, who has publicly called out Russia for election interference in the past, said he was 'not dismissing the issue in any way' and did not echo that language.

The coincidences just keep coming. Odd.

Trump Team Met With Lawyer Linked to Kremlin During Campaign

Two weeks after Donald J. Trump clinched the Republican presidential nomination last year, his eldest son arranged a meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan with a Russian lawyer who has connections to the Kremlin, according to confidential government records described to The New York Times.

The previously unreported meeting was also attended by Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort, as well as the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, according to interviews and the documents, which were outlined by people familiar with them.

While President Trump has been dogged by revelations of undisclosed meetings between his associates and Russians, this episode at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, is the first confirmed private meeting between a Russian national and members of Mr. Trump’s inner circle during the campaign. It is also the first time that his son Donald Trump Jr. is known to have been involved in such a meeting.

Representatives of Donald Trump Jr. and Mr. Kushner confirmed the meeting after The Times approached them with information about it. In a statement, Donald Jr. described the meeting as primarily about an adoption program. The statement did not address whether the presidential campaign was discussed.

Don Trump Jr. Suggests Paying Afro-Americans To Return To Africa

As if the sting of not having a single nominee in this year’s Oscar awards was not enough, black celebrities have been dealt another blow, this time by Don Trump Jnr. The mogul’s son offered to foot the bill for black critics of his father to take leave of the United States

Appearing on ‘’Fox and Friends’’ with sibling, Eric Trump, Don was deliberating ‘’Super Tuesday’’ elections as well as the intensive assault that has been launched against his father. ‘’You know, it’s sad to see’’ he quipped, referring to the harassment. ‘’We love our father. He’s an amazing guy – he would do such an unbelievable job for this country. He’s an amazing businessman, he’s an amazing negotiator. He’s funding himself, right?’’

Don went on to envisage what he called a ‘’historic turnout for the GOP’’ because his father had successfully aroused the interest of non – traditional voters who would otherwise not show up for the polls. Countering this notion, Ainsley Earhardt, who was presenting the show noted that there were some showbiz personalities who, ‘’don’t think he’s going to make America great’’, contrary to the campaign catchphrase and baseball cap mottos.

To substantiate this claim, the network brought up footage of Whoopi Goldberg, Al Sharpton and Raven – Symone, all black personalities, who voiced their desire to leave the country if Trump or any other Republican for that matter won the race. Don however was not moved, responding, ‘’I’ll buy them airfare.’’ He laughed it off, saying, ‘’I’m more than happy to chip in.’’

The brothers were in agreement that the negativity and ill – comments only served to spur Trump further on as they viewed this as confirmation of his progress and firm position. ‘’These are endorsements for Trump,’’ the boisterous son remarked. ‘’That’s the thing – when you have the establishment people in the debates, and they stack the debates with a thousand people that are all booing, those are voters for us. Because the people in the audience watching at home are like, ‘Wait a minute – he’s saying what I’m thinking.’ I love that. That’s as good an endorsement as we could possibly get. ‘’

Republicans blast Trump idea for cyber security unit with Russia

By*Valerie Volcovici and Yasmeen Abutaleb*|*WASHINGTON

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he and Russia's president had discussed forming a cyber security unit, an idea harshly criticized by Republicans who said Moscow could not be trusted after its alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Tweeting after his first meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Trump said now was the time to work constructively with Moscow, pointing to a ceasefire deal in southwest Syria that came into effect on Sunday.

"Putin & I discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded and safe," he said following their talks at a summit of the Group of 20 nations in Hamburg, Germany.

Republican Senators Lindsey Graham, an influential South Carolina Republican who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Marco Rubio of Florida, who opposed Trump for their party's presidential nomination, blasted the idea.

"It's not the dumbest idea I have ever heard but it's pretty close," Graham told NBC's "Meet the Press" program, saying that Trump's apparent willingness to "forgive and forget" stiffened his resolve to pass legislation imposing sanctions on Russia.

Rubio, on Twitter, said: "While reality & pragmatism requires that we engage Vladimir Putin, he will never be a trusted ally or a reliable constructive partner.

"Partnering with Putin on a 'Cyber Security Unit' is akin to partnering with (Syrian President Bashar al) Assad on a 'Chemical Weapons Unit'," he added.

Trump argued for rapprochement with Moscow in his campaign but has been unable to deliver because his administration has been dogged by investigations into the allegations of Russian interference in the election and ties with his campaign.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the matter, including whether there may have been any collusion on the part of Trump campaign officials, as are congressional committees including both the House and Senate intelligence panels.
