Wait, so even if an actual nazi were to use a thumbs up and say it means heil Hitler, it doesn't really mean that? Signs only have the meaning that we imbue them with. If I think a sign means something then when I use it, that's what it means.

It doesn't matter what the vestigial or even common meaning is. That's why societies have secret handshakes and languages - to signify to themselves ideas that can't be communicated in public.

So when in your mind does symbolism change? Because racists intentionally and repeatedly using a symbol with a shared meaning is... what exactly?

Like the middle finger. A raised middle finger doesn't inherently mean anything, but the shared meaning infers something quite specific.

Answering both of you because its essentially the same question. Within the context its his words that carry the meaning not the thumbs up, if i use the thumbs up the next day its meaning hasnt changed. Symbols dont just change overnight because of a group of trolls, which is what you guys are completely missing and in the end just feeding and proving the trolls right.

lulz

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Because some people had to tell us in two separate threads how much they dislike him. :X3:

(Not referring to you Unhappy).

Well thats good because im really confused :)

Trump’s Tariffs Are Killing American Steel

Yet nearly a year after Trump slapped tariffs on imported steel, the U.S. steel industry is not thriving. It is reeling. Steel prices have fallen back to pre-tariff levels. Employment is stagnant. The clearest sign that tariffs are not working, however, is the stock market.

If the president’s policies were working as planned, the steel industry should outperform other sectors. Yet as the graphic above shows, since Trump announced steel tariffs on March 1, 2018, steel-producer stock prices have plummeted 22 percent—while the S&P 500 index has fallen only three percent.

Good old Richard Spencer is thanking Trump for emboldening the Far Right.

From the horses mouth.
RICHARD SPENCER:

There is no question that Charlottesville wouldn’t have occurred without Trump. It really was because of his campaign and this new potential for a nationalist candidate who was resonating with the public in a very intense way. The alt-right found something in Trump. He changed the paradigm and made this kind of public presence of the alt-right possible.

An Oral History of Trump’s Bigotry
His racism and intolerance have always been in evidence; only slowly did he begin to understand how to use them to his advantage.

Pretty good article, with a ton of interviews.
For those interested, the complete, unedited transcript of Trump's press conference following the Charlotteville incident that is has been taken out of context by CNN, MSNBC, Democrat politicians, and the rest of the democrat mouthpiece media. There's even a video of 10 minutes of it, for those don't want to read the whole transcript.

White House Refuses to Support 'Christchurch Call' That Condemns Extremism Online, Releases Absolutely Bonkers Statement

Further, we maintain that the best tool to defeat terrorist speech is productive speech, and thus we emphasize the importance of promoting credible, alternative narratives as the primary means by which we can defeat terrorist messaging
Suddenly the White House is a proponent of using words to combat online terrorism.

You want to see a bird cemetery? Go under a windmill sometime.

You will see the saddest, you got every type of bird. You know, in California you go to jail for five years if you kill a bald eagle. You go under a windmill, you see them all over the place. Not a good situation.
Jip. When you turn electrical generation into a partisan issue and mix it up with climate change you get this nonsense on one side and we are all going to die of rising sea levels on the other side.

The Christchurch call is firstly a non binding agreement so it is just an attempt to virtue signal. If you take something seriously it should be binding.
Secondly read it. I just did. It is a long winded attempt to virtue signal without saying anything.
Bla bla bla open and free Internet. bla bla bla, lets have government regulations.

The context of "fine people on both sides" that has been repeated time and again insinuating that he was supporting supremacists and neo nazis when he gave unambiguous condemnation of those people and was referring to those who were there (from both sides of the political divide) simply to protest the issue of pulling down the statue.

Yes, of course, the statue...

Of Robert E. Lee

The same Robert E. Lee who treasonously declared war on the United States... a war that killed around a million Americans... and was subsequently lost by one Robert E. Lee...

All in the defense of slavery.

That statue?
