When Obama cited those statistics he was trying to do something to prevent situations like Alton Martins from happening. The only relationship he had with the cop killer was a shared nexus of concern, but you can't blame him for stoking violence because there is no trace of that in his speech.

When Trump speaks about a Mexican invasion and creates videos of Mexicans swarming the border, it has one purpose - to fearmomger and stoke the racial sentiments of his base; in a way that I don't believe we've seen in any President in my lifetime at least. Maybe ever.

It has always been inevitable that some sick and evil people would latch onto his words and take them as literally as they appear to be. Cesar Sayoc and Crusius and the guy who body slammed a kid for not taking off his cap and James Fields and the Quebec City shooter and Scott and Steve Leader and Curtis Allen and Alex Bissonnette and plenty more have taken direct inspiration and fandom of Trump to the point of awful violence.

IGAF if you take me seriously, the point stands. A literal invasion of your country by a foreign force is cause to take up guns. Concentration camps and institutional police racism are cause to protest and change the system of government.

And Trump HAS stirred up blatant and undeniable calls to violent action. Not goddam Toni Morrison saying that white people need to change which somehow means she's genocidal in your screwed-up head. Not people burning effigies of Trump, which is a common form of protest for centuries. He's stood there and told his followers to beat up a protester, and promised to pay their legal fees if they did.

Not intent so much as causality. Nobody echoed Obama's rhetoric when they were inspired to kill people. Nobody targeted Obama's political opponents and the people he had called the enemies of the state and led chants about locking them up when they were mailing pipe bombs. Trump's rhetoric is violent and he inspires real violence in his followers, all the time.
