I installed the update for Winxp x64 file and settings transfer through Windizupdate and it totally busted my graphics.

Microsoft released an article with the symptoms http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;191660

Direct 3d acceleration and directdraw becomes greyed out in dxdiag and no games work!!! The video memory becomes n/a and you are screwed

This is just a friendly warning to everyone, microsoft blames everything else, except the update, I installed in 2 pc's on the same day and only found out today that both pc's have the same symptoms, now will have to format and windows update stays off this time!!

The update is WindowsXP-KB913580-x86-ENU
Even if you uninstall the update, it stays the same, it is irreversable

You say you have Window XP 64-bit edition?

I don't know, but that update looks like a normal 32-bit update to me. Can you put 32-bit updates on a 64-bit OS?

WindowsXP-KB913580-x86-ENU

I don't have x64, I've got 32bit XP Pro, the update is to allow 32bit to transfer files to x64, it's propably for files and settings transfer wizard.

This could only be limited to me, but I installed that update on the same day on both pc's around the beginning of June and only realised today that both pc's have a directx issue, I narrowed it down to that update, since the second pc was not updated in ages, it only installed 2 updates and the update in question was installed on both pc's with the same outcome.

Like I say, it could be only limited to me, but I'll never use windows update again, what a mission!

Format cleared up the problem, I didn't have to format, but it was long overdue anyways. I'll just run a repair install on the other pc :)

Hope this doesn't happen to any of you guys.

much love

Edit: Repair install does not work, only format. BAD; VERY BAD!

Did this happen to anyone else?

Lol, that could've worked, I did a repair install on the second pc, before trying system restore, now it won't be possible to do system restore. I formatted one pc today, will format the other one tomorrow.

Stupidity comes at a great cost.
