Dota 2 Auto Chess is apparently all the rage at the moment
https://kotaku.com/dota-2-custom-mode-is-either-one-of-steams-top-games-or-1831749731

I installed it last night and played late into the morning. It's a load of fun, I'm not going to go into details as theres a great guide here

I've played about 8-10 games, the first 3 being train wrecks while figuring the mechanics out, but I just can't seem to pick up a win. My early and mid game is strong but I always seem to have a player who comes out of nowhere and pips me to first place, usually in the last 5 rounds.

Anyone else playing? What are your thoughts?

I might be going full retard here, but do you need Dota 2 installed to play this? Or is this a stand-alone download?

Either I suck badly at this mod, or I have the worst luck in the history of Dota. I barely ever get past wave 20 playing on my own vs a cloud player...

Game is all about synergy between units and economy management. A build I often use to get to late game is abandon, ck, luna (knights) with mech or magic. The read post I linked to is an excellent guide. How do you play vs a cloud player?

Just create a lobby and start the game with 1 person (have not tried it with more than 1, but it is ideal for trying to master the game without making your name a$$ on a live server).

Took me a few games to get it down, will give that a shot with my mates. My current issue is late game,by the time my late game build comes online I'm almost dead. Need to work on mid game, if you can't save gold you might as well start a new game unless you've got a great combo.

Just tried it, yoh the solo mode is hard. Got to level 28, the beginning is killer. You're ready for online if you got to lvl 20

Played a couple of pubs and playing vs humans is much easier than playing vs "cloud" players. Got ranked as Knight 7 (dunno if that is good... :D)

Yeah I'm winning most of my games now, if I have a bad start it's top 3. Humans are way easier than cloud, you can't save much when playing cloud.

If you don't have time to go through the guide, here are the things you need to know.
  • Don't be afraid to go on a losing streak. Any type of streak (winning or losing) gives you extra gold. The worst thing you can do early game is to flip between the two. Often times I will intentionally leave my board near empty to keep losing to make bank. This will help you later.
  • Try to be above 50 gold if you can. This nets you 5 gold in interest (maximum).
  • Unit synergy is very important. Make sure you get enough units of the same race/class to fulfill this, as the bonuses are very good. For example, Tinker + Clock + Timber is a very popular early game build as this gives Mechs (15 HP regen) and Goblins (10 HP regen and 10 Armour to random unit) synergy.
  • For synergy, you need to have different units to gain the bonus. For example, you need 2 Undead units to gain the armour reduction to enemies. Having 2 Drow Rangers does not grant this (they don't stack), but having Drow Ranger and Abaddon does.
  • The units you get are dependent on what everyone else has as everyone chooses from the same pool of units. While you get 5 random units per refresh, the 5 are chosen from the available pool. If 3 players are all going for Axe, your chances of getting him are going to be lower. Use this to adapt. Check what other players are building and change your line up as needed. For example, if no one is going mage then start buying them up and change over to them later.
  • Advanced mechanic: Keep units on your bench to deny the enemy the chance to get them. As mentioned, everyone draws from the same pool. If you know your opponents really want an Axe to upgrade and you get one, buy it and keep it on the bench to further decrease the chances of anyone getting another one.
  • You can include some units if they have strong spells, even if they have no synergy with your build. Kunkka, Medusa, Tidehunter, Lich etc all have really good spells so can be run on their own.
  • Remember that every 5 waves starting at wave 10 are creep waves (10, 15, 20, etc). Try to win these as they can grant you items.
