DOVADO UMR; 3G USB router now in South Africa

Power Switch

Thanks, I must have had a blonde moment.
Sorted out thanks.

I really like your wifi modem but would like to make a suggestion.
Unlike always on connections (ADSL) most users of 3G connections disconnect the modem when not being used.
Would it not be possible to incorporate a power switch into this modem for this purpose.
My Linksys 3G router had this feature which I found very convient.
At least by switching off the wifi signal the connection remains secure.;)

Also, What about a high gain antenna as an accessory?

Regards

You can send your DOVADO UMR an SMS with the "disconnect" command to go offline from the Internet, and then a "connect" command to go online. Try it out. Read more here: http://www.dovado.com/sms

You can use any standard Reverse-SMA antenna with it. There are loads of suppliers for that.

Are there any plans to use the second USB port for an external storage device, such as an external hard drive? If not, does anyone know of a device that can do that?

We're looking into new features involving the 2nd USB port. There are so many one can come up with. We'll reveal once we're close to any major betas. Our development team is very busy coding up new features.

Thanks

I am contemplating whether or not to purchase the device, but at the moment it hinges on the external storage point. I am definitely keen to get it if the plan is use the second port for external storage, but if I have to find another device to do this, then I will have to keep looking.

Hi Neilh,

Well, it's very rare that people select the UMR for that particular purpose, as we have not announced plans for external storage, however, you can always sign up for firmware updates, and should it be made available, you won't have to wait long before finding out: http://www.dovado.com/umrfirmware

In the meantime, take a look at what other features we have invested our development resources in:

Great, got me one, works cool with my E220 so far. The "SMS me every x-MB used" is actually awesome, since MTN/Vodacom can't seem to do that i guess i'll do it myself via this router ;). (The SMS features is VERY important for me, controlling your usage on a 3G-contract is a nightmare! Shocking bills galore).

Also amazingly easy to get going, took me 2 minutes..it's actually easier than setting up the E220 on your pc/laptop [i.e. installing drivers/vmc/connect software]...scary.

Got mine for R1750 at Poynting [not the price you see on their website] [their prices EXCLUDE VAT , that's the only sour point in this deal, you only see the "excl vat" when you pay] . So don't be misled by the buggers!

Still R1899 at Incredible Corruption though.

How to sms 100

They are available at Cellucity for R1699 but were out of stock in benmore so managed to get it from incredible connection for same price instead of R1899.

My question is - when sending an SMS from the device you must specify
the number in international format so it does not let me SMS Balance to 100 or MyGig1 to 100 to purchase a bundle from Vodacom. +2782100 doesnt work either. (I can however sms myself properly and receive sms's).

Anyone know how to use the 100 number with +2782.... ??

Try the following.

Send the sms to +100, We only do a check that there is a + sign in the beginning of the phone number.

This is documented on our UMR support website: http://www.dovado.com/UMR_Support.html#umrsmsshortno

Best Regards
Mathias

I purchased mine today and it was a fairly painless setup process, even the firmware upgrade. Also struggled with the SMS (I am on Telkom 3G), but it is working now that I have added a +before the 2222 number

A couple of further questions:
-Is there any way to see speed statistics through the modem - found that quite handy with the Mobile Partner software on my modem (E220)
-The website support describes a way how to see usage on your desktop for XP. Is there a way to do this on Vista?

Tx

Isn't that just a link to the router's page? i.e. http://192.168.0.1 ...on top you can see the usage.

If you don't see the connection details, then update your firmware. My router didn't have it initially until i updated.

I see this :
Date: 2009-06-30
Time: 18:30

Traffic Down / Up (GB)
Modem: 2.59 / 0.29
ETH: 0.00 / 0.00

Signal: 19 % (3G)
Connection: USB

SMS (0)

You can also see above status directly with a link like this : http://192.168.0.1/cgi-bin/statusbar.cgi?getall+/content/statusbar.html. With Google Chrome you can make the link into a "desktop application" if you like then it runs in it's own little process.

[just replace 192.168.0.1 to whatever your router's IP is set to...that's the default though]

Thanks - usage not a problem stats are not bad on that, what would be nice is to see real-time download and upload speeds.

Running firmware v3.0.5

I think it's best that you use some PC-based tools for that because a utility like that would hog up the CPU of the router and burden the other processes.

Care to describe how to do this for everyone to learn?

Thanks

EDIT: Screenshot of what it looks like on my desktop [Note i used Firefox Prism here, Chrome will look the same], note the seperate process in the taskbar and desktop shortcut with the Dovado Icon : http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8634/clipboard22a.jpg.
(The app will still refresh automatically like it does in the browser)

Do you rely heavily on some websites, such as your email? If so, you may want to create applications shortcuts for these websites that can be placed on your computer desktop, Quick Launch menu, and Start menu for easy access. Here's how:

1. Click the page menu page menu.
2. Select Create application shortcuts.
3. In the Gears dialog box, select the checkboxes for the locations where you want shortcuts to be placed.
4. Click OK.

When you double-click a shortcut icon, the website opens in a special streamlined window that doesn't display tabs, buttons, the address bar, or menus. Many of the browser functions are available instead in the drop-down menu that appears when you click the page logo in the upper-right corner of the window. If you click a link that takes you to a different website, the link opens in a standard Google Chrome window so you won't lose track of your website.

Basically browse [in Chrome] to your router page (mine is http://192.168.0.1 ) OR if you only want the statsbar it will be http://192.168.0.1/cgi-bin/statusbar.cgi?getall+/content/statusbar.html . Follow the process above.

NOTE: If you don't use Chrome, you can do the same with Firefox via the Prism Addon , get it here : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6665

And without going way off track, there's also Adobe Air: (http://www.adobe.com/products/air/) that can do this with IE. Adobe Air however is usually more aimed at the developer to create , usually the website creator would create the Adobe Air Applet [it will then look like a Vista Widget which can float on your desktop...very slick].

The end result is turning a web site into a desktop application without rewriting it into one :). Idea is to then make the website itself functional and fancy instead of creating a standalone desktop app.

I bought my Dovado from Inc Con 2 months ago. Really a great device, I found it extremely easy and quick to get up and running. Use it with my E-272 modem and cradle.

I would like to see an on/off switch on it though, maybe I should install one myself - I hate pulling the power plug out to switch it off.
