It's a pro in EVERY respect except a marginal increase in fuel consumption depending on what car you are looking at. For example, a AWD Forester uses between 4 and 6 l/100 LESS than a FWD Jeep Compass ( 2.0 litre) and up to 7 litres LESS than a Jeep Patriot with a 2.4 4 cylinder... (4x4/4x2)

You cannot just make a sweeping statement like that without actually comparing models.

I got 12l/100km average from my Patriot, when driving like a Brenden_E and in Cape Town traffic, so a Forester does 5l/100km... Wow! Fantastic! This from the guy that called Brenden_E out for inflating things...

Sounds like Chev Orlando will fit your bill nicely. You may feel yourself gravitating towards the Trailblazer but the Orlando is a true workhorse with family in mind. There's no compromise on features and sheer impact. Why stick out like a sore thumb when you can travel in safety and comfort.

MPV's, I would rather get a low mileage Merc B-class, or the 2.0 TDi DSG Touran for my R350k.

then I think you're on the wrong thread. OP wants a SUV or crossover at best. Either the Orlando or Captiva will serve him nicely. I'm more of X5 fanatic myself but I don't suspect OP is after glitz and glam here. Just don't tell him our Chev's are probably coming out of Korea, but that could change eventually.

Personally I suggest OP go for a double-cab and canopy. Just not sure which brand carries this class best. The Dodge Ram is certainly above and beyond. I suspect you can fill this nicely with an Amarok.

The Orlando is an MPV, it is definitely not a crossover or an SUV. Ground clearance is 123mm... Haha. That means even the B-class is more of a crossover than it will ever be. Also, the Orlando has that horrible 1.8L engine, which is way past it's sell by date.

What about Mitshibishi ASX / Outlander? No ridiculous price of the Jeeps and less pretentious design. A real compact beast, highly manoeuvrable without risking a backflip bushdive. BMW over Merc any day.

Subaru XV. Even the demos are great.
Give the man a Bells! :D

QT, I expected a chirp from you! :)
I am basing my figures on real figures that we got at work - as you know, I was selling both Subaru and Jeep, so got to drive both.

Luckily, I got to choose what cars I drove, and I had a Compass for a month, whilst we were waiting for Subaru demo stock, and could NOT get it into single figures - I was still better than the Jeep guys ( some sales people were exclusively Jeep ) as most of them were sitting in the 12 to 14 l/100 range, whether they drove Patriots or Compass'. When I got my new Forester, I was immediately down to high 8's, and that improved as mileage built up.

Unlike Brendan_E I do not have a point to make as I couldn't give a hoot how he drives, quite frankly. My figures are based on living with both cars on a daily basis, and we are looking at 5 Jeep demos and 4 Subaru to get my figures.

The turbo Subaru has always been a guzzler, with the exception of the new WRX, in which I was averaging mid to high 8's in normal driving, and low 7's on long runs.

I no longer sell either car, but I know which one I would buy.

Sorry to say, but all cars mentioned here are actually glorified station wagons, some with AWD. At best, they can only be described as compact SUVs. Fortuner, Pajero, Pajero Sport, Pathfinder, Everest, Discovery etc, those are SUVs in my book.

Something wrong with your "real figures", as the real figures I posted from Fuelly shows very clearly... Your colleagues that got 14l/100km were doing something wrong. Just over 12l/100km was the highest I achieved, even for short trips in bumper to bumper traffic. If I drove like a gentleman, 10.5l/100km. On the long road, within the speed limit, 9l/100km was very possible. I'm not saying the latest Forester does not have slightly better consumption than the Patriot, but to say that a Forester does 7l/100km better than a Patriot... well that is preposterous.

ok

Pajero might be slight overkill given OP's needs and budget.

BTW I'm a very relaxed driver. You claimed that you will get single figures even when driving like a poepal (sick). Let me point it out to you, that's it's impossible to get those figures when you drive mildly enthusiastically.

Unlike you, I actually bought a Subaru and didn't only drive one for work. Why would I slate it and what's my agenda? I believe it's a great car, but fuel efficiency is not one of it's selling points. You often talk through your hind quarter.

Why can't you guys spell poepol correctly? What is a poepal? Who is Poe and is he really your pal?

Actually it's poephol :)
Which for the English speaking, translates to fart hole. Very nice.
Only an old school one-foot-still-in-the-Netherlands poepol will spell it poephol. We got rid of the Dutch and the 'h' long ago!

And direct translation is actually fart hole :D
