Hehe... Can't believe I'm saying this, but Brenden_E is the only one talking sense. Fazda, go back to sitting on the beach, sipping Mojitos, as any retired car salesman should do.

I find it interesting how much consumption figures differ between people. I drive a 2004 Outback 2.5i. For the past 4300 km, almost exclusively town driving in traffic I average 9.3km/l. I don't drive like a bat out of hell, but I'm not driving miss Daisy either.

-_-

Will all the individuals who get better fuel consumption than the manufacturer's claim please stand up.

...
...

O Hi, Fazda. All by yourself?

I also do better than the manufacturer claim
Normal driving, some town, some open road. After 9000km of tracking (not via the computer, via actual fills up and distance travelled) I'm below the claim

At the risk of continuing the bun fight, how do the diesel Foresters compare? Been eyeing one of those as a replacement.

The manufacturer's claim is calculated in absolute ideal conditions. Unless you over-inflate your tyres, there's no reasonable way you can better it. Far more likely you made a mistake in your calculation.

Before I slip off to the beach, I would just like to know why Brenden is talking sense and I am not.

You and I were talking Subaru v/s Jeep and your Fuelly figures agree with the fact that Subaru is lighter than a Jeep. My figures were based on demo vehicles that are all driven as if they are stolen, so my figures would be higher than those on Fuelly, however, in my OWN Subaru's ( 3 x Outbacks in which I did in excess of 200 000 in the one, 167 000 in the other, and 52 000 in the last one) I constantly got figures between 8 and 9 litres/100 - my best in the last one was 6.9 l/100 from Jhb to Dbn in absolutely ideal conditions, but it is possible.

Unfortunately Brenden appears to have rather a large log on his shoulder when it comes to anything that I say - enough of one to actually trash his own car and his own consumption figures if it helps in an argument against me - go figure....

I DO manage to get better than average figures in all of my cars, and that is entirely down to driving style. I come from a generation where pride was taken in being able to drive a car with mechanical sympathy, and as a result, the car usually repays one with decent consumption figures.

I do not see the point in driving a car as if you stole it - after all the only person who will feel it, is yourself at the fuel pump.

If you are a masochist who likes to feel pain at the fuel pump, then go for it - just doesn't suit me, that's all. :)

Ever read the book death of a salesman? It's a classic.

I certainly did - if you recall, I was an English teacher for 36 years before I sold the odd car. :)

And you point is?

You said it is better by 7l/100km... Which is complete BS. Look at the Fuelly figures again. The new Forester is marginally lighter (Patriot also improved with new gearbox), but the old one was about the same.

Whatever... He does that whenever he feels like it. I've been his target a few times too. Today, he is right.

QT - please just accept the fact that I was quoting figures that we were getting on the Jeeps at the Dealership.

None of them were averaging below 14 l/100 - to make a direct comparison with my XV v/s a Compass - both 2.0 litres - the XV was constantly in the low 7's whilst the Compass was always 14 plus - in the month that I had one, I got it down to 10.5, driving exceptionally carefully.

Let's just leave it at that - I will happily go with your Fuelly figures.

No, I will not have accept that. It is your blind carsist (like racism for cars...) hatred of Jeep, that made you make up stuff :erm: :D

*Makes note not to buy a demo Subaru... :)

BTW, the above was my attempt at humour, and not in any way any sort of slight on Subaru.

OP, hows your decision coming along?

I'm following the thread. As I said though, I'm in no rush and this, and my past dealer visits, are indications of interest :) I seem to have a list that I'm wittling down, which I'll post here soon. I still can't get over the fact that exactly one XV is available in SA.

Yeah that is interesting/ concerning/ perhaps of no consequence. Don't know much about them but apparently boot space wasn't great. But have a look-see for yourself, see if it works.

Looks like three XV models on their site, or am I misunderstanding you?
