I did this trip two weeks ago, I slept over in Bloem. Lots of trucks on the road and they drive badly, it's possible to do it in one day, I left at 5h00 in the morning and got to bloem just after 15h00, so could've potentially driven all the way and got to GP before dark, but it's a long drive and the roads are busy so you get tired, I wouldn't advise driving straight through.
Okay, so you've done it recently, will definitely consider Bloem, between trucks and reports of cops along the way, maybe a good idea to do a stop over

Especially in Colesberg. I got pulled over 3 times going there and back, on the way up in Beaufort West, no issues, then in Colesberg, bitch gave me a R500 ticket, and then again in Colesberg on the way back. You can check the Summer place (something like that) guest house in Bloem, old lady was very friendly and her food is nice as well.

Yip, worst was as she was writing the ticket she was chatting ever so friendly and asking me lots of personal stuff. Horrid woman. I'd rather avoid driving too fast along the way if I was in your shoes.

Plan to leavr CPT 4am, as soon as curfew ends
I've done the trip a few times, in a E90 320d actually.

1. Try to leave as early as possible
2. prep food & drinks to keep the stops to a minimum
3. Get your entertainment ready - in my case podcasts & audiobooks - you dont want to be falling asleep.
4. I wont recommend Bloem as a halfway stop to be honest. Its not really a halfway stop (much more than that) - my preferred stop is Coleberg - lots of cheap guest houses there.

You should average round about 5-5.5L per 100km if you only do 120km/h

Do the drive it is fun seeing the country.
Sleep well the night before. Try and leave 3 am. By the time the sun is up you can stop for breakfast and you have done 500 km. After breakie you will feel good to go again. Then stop every 2 hours. get out stretch your legs.
i have done that trip many times and and drove it in 1 day.

Those engines are really really light on diesel on the open road. Best I ever got was 4.08L per 100km for a 800km round trip (actual usage, not OBC figures). Granted I did only drive 100km/h

If absolutely necessary, may make a stop in Bloemfontein.
Might depend on what time you arrive CT.
Do CT to Bloem via PE in one day but leave early.
Just do the seep over in Bloem nothing to see there.

Hi All

Cant seem to find the last thread on driving from CPT to JHB

Long story short, thinking of buying a car from a dealer in CPT, so will fly down.

Anyone done the trip recently, never done it before, i know it can be done in a day, unfortunately dont have alot of leave ti sacrifice so will be done on 1 day.

Any thing i should be mindful of? Condition of roads? Any hotspot areas along the way? Any other advice for this trip?

I did it in one day at the end of 2009 in a 1982 VW MkI Golf GLS and loved every minute of it  I stopped for fuel twice, the roads were quiet and the Golf never missed a beat.
