Driving licence renewal problem in South Africa

The Automobile Association (AA) has called for a moratorium on fining motorists without renewed driving licences that must be implemented as a matter of urgency.

The organisation further asked for immediate steps to be taken to fix the current renewal processes.

Renewing driver's licenses is one of the stupidest things in the history of mankind. I had to renew mine end of last year and it was such a pain to do it here in Joburg that I actually drove to a different province just to get it done.

Anyone who gets fined for an expired drivers or vehicle licence should refuse to pay the fine and insist on being prosecuted in court. Eventually the courts will be clogged up with so many cases that the authorities will have to do something about the situation.

That's the point. Either the prosecutor will cancel the fine and throw it out, or you will eventually get to stand in front of a magistrate and explain how you tried to renew but you just simply were not able to due to the incompetence of the authorities.

Waltloo? I was there for my appointment yesterday. After waiting in line for 1.5 hours, I got this response. Apparently the bookings are valid for 14 days, which defeats the purpose of making a booking in the first place.

Yesterday I went to Durbanville Municipality to renew my vehicle licence which expired end of August. I stood in the queue for 3.5 hours, and when we got to the front they closed the doors in our faces, because it was 15:30 and they refused to help the last 5 people. Absolutely pathetic service.

I applied for renewal in Jan 2019.
Got the SMS to collect 2 months ago, beginning Aug 2020.
On the card it says the issue date was Feb 2019.
