Driving your own car to work beats Uber

A MyBroadband analysis has revealed that driving South Africa's most affordable car, the Suzuki S-Presso, is generally cheaper than ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt.

South Africa's fuel prices are relatively high, with the price of unleaded 93 at R20.98 as of 6 November 2024, and many residents hoping to save money may be looking for alternatives to driving to work.

How much do you need to earn to afford the Suzuki S-presso?
What are the insurance costs of the Suzuki S-presso?
How much more are you going to spend to fill up a tank next month for the Suzuki S-presso?

Suzuki S-presso is also the most horrible car to ever exist. I would rather walk.
Honestly, you have to wonder how a team of professionals that gets paid money could design such an ugly looking car. Everytime I almost see one, I look away till it passes.

Meanwhile, my car works out to about R1.92 / km if I don't include the instalment (I take it that MyBroadband didn't do so, since I don't see any mention of it). Even with the instalment added, I still only pay R3.78 / km.

1. Most dont drive Suzuki Espresso's.

Also you have to add in cost to purchase, cost of maintenance and ownership and licensing.

A lot of vehicles sits in between the 7-12litres per 100km in SA.

How to get it right with Uber? My colleagues have worked it out to a T.

4 of them stay very close together. They will go to the one's house, order Uber that then takes them to work. And the same when they return. Has saved them a total fortune.

So next time Daniel, you have to add in all the costs. But good try.

Same car is R1.72 per km.

Bike is R0.9 per km which includes all maintenance, services, tyres, brakes everything for the last 8 years.

It's not worth the hassle of driving a shitbox just to get 1 l/100km down off an actually good car.

I think Tracker is on crack with their R4.84 estimate unless it does include the actual cost of purchase too.

Now factor in the car installment, and the effort of also driving yourself. Not to mention the time that could be spent being productive while someone else drives you. That small difference between the two suddenly swings in favour of e-hailing.

It becomes even more of a no-brainer if you don't have to go in 5 days a week...

For that effort. you could have added Gautrain for the viable routes
Centurion Central to Sandton (x44) = R2843
Centurion Central to Hatfield (x44) = R1758
Bus (single side, peak, x22) +R528

Hey @Daniel Puchert

Please add the number of km to the table.

Please add the number of km to the table, not all of us know those routes.
