There is never an excuse for drunk driving... Even Sans the Uber option. But this is not a deterrent this is merely the rtmc being retarded.... It would cost them so much money in lawsuits they would be bankrupt within 3 months.Yoh savage! It will definitely act as a deterant and with the ease and affordability of Uber there is really no excuse for drunk driving.
I tend to agreeThis would effectively be an extra-judicial punishment and I doubt it would be constitutional.
It's completely stupid. If they want to do this they should raise the levels so that it's okay to drive home after a braai were you only had 2 or 3 drinks and only lock up those people completely wasted.with all the stuff that happens to people in lock up, is this not a bit harsh
The obvious problem here isn't drunk driving it is just driving "under the influence" which has a very low limit, legally.Yoh savage! It will definitely act as a deterant and with the ease and affordability of Uber there is really no excuse for drunk driving.
Over the limit is over the limit they don't make a distinction between 2 beers and off your face drunkIs this for drunk drivers or sober drivers slightly over the limit?

No, I didn't think of that. You don't perhaps think that I was already mindful of this when making my post?

I always drive home after a social event and I never have any issues. Why don't I just uber, because I have my own car.
It is a ridiculous attempt to turn more normal people into criminals. Surely the police should keep themselves busy fighting real crime, which is out of control.
No, I didn't think of that.
So the worse example you can think of is someone driving on the wrong side of the road after dark. I see taxis doing that in day light. How did you manage to talk to her if she only almost bumped you?Normal people, or law abiding citizens, don't drink and drive. And if two beers pushes you over the limit, maybe you should rather just have one beer and have the other one at home? Nobody HAS TO drink.
And this is also an out of control problem on the same level as other crimes, drunk drivers causes accidents. I had a young lady almost drive into me and a friend a few months ago on the bottelary road, drunk. She drove on the wrong side of the road, also claimed to only have had a few drinks.
That's what a trial is for. This proposal sounds more like an attempt to bypass due process. The state knows they cannot successfully prosecute a lot of these cases, possibly due to their own stupidity and incompetence, so they're attempting to simply impose an automatic 7 day sentence on each person they arrest. They know and we know that those arrested will be flung into overcrowded cells with violent criminals where they stand a good chance of being assaulted, raped and murdered. All I can say is don't complain when the government steps over the line in other areas if you support this. How is breaking the law and being punished oppressive, especially when you are knowingly breaking the law?
For that to work the current system would have to be working, and in that case there'd be nothing to do.I agree 100%... its a massive problem. I don't have a solution to it though, not sure what can be done. The only thing that would work is zero tolerance drinking and driving, ie, outlaw it completely... but for that to work it requires 'honest cops' and zero corruption...
The metropolice out late at night are normally decent people. Sometimes you get a bad one that tries to fish for a bribe but mostly if you're just polite and tell them you had a few drinks they let you drive on.I rarely venture out so I am a cheap date with no self controlso I just Uber and can enjoy myself without the stress of getting home safely.

Yeah I also know of a few examples.A friend of mine wrote of two cars (his and another), killed the passenger in the other a few years back. Was under the influence. Court cases are still going on.
Yup, they're going to use this for one of their favourite specials too... arresting people for unpaid love letters aka dodgy speeding fines. The RTMC is bullshi**ing people. This does not only count for drunk driving, it counts for any offence you are arrested for. The State can ask for a 7 day postponement in order to prepare for a bail application. They normally do this when it is a serious offence and they need to verify a person's identity or confirm addresses and information for purposes of bail.
If you cooperate and provide all your information, they will never get a 7-day postponement in the case of drunk driving.
I do feel sorry for those people. I used to drink and drive when I was a youngster many years ago, that's what youngsters do... And I was lucky nothing came of that. But if people won't listen to reason, then they have to be taught a lesson. Only relatively recently have I realized what an absolute idiot I was back then.I have a very close friend, who I have talked to many may times about his drinking and driving. He also has a family. He rolled his paid off car about a month and a half ago.
Now he is up his knees in crap. Court date and insurance refused to pay out. He told me he only realized about a week after the accident that he hadn't had a cigarette yet.
People should learn that drinking and driving is dangerous. This friend of mine has now stopped drinking and smoking completely, but why does the worse have to happen first?
Chuck them in jail, if you don't understand the dangers yet maybe this will teach you.
