Good Day

Now that the Telkom Free modem offer is over (for Self install) and reduced capping on TI accounts seem to be in place (??), it seems as if the complete DSL packages from other ISPs have become more competitive. The following complete packages are available : month to month (All VAT included, i think)

SolConnect - 4Mb + 3Gb for R499
- 4Mb + 5Gb for R575
- SAIX Local at R150 for 10Gb
- Top Up DSl Boost 1Gb for R69 (no expiry)

Axxess - 4Mb + 3Gb for R538
- SAix Local @ R170
- Top Up 1Gb for R69 (12 months)

Telkom Do 3 - 4Mb + 3Gb for R554

Webafrica - 4Mb + 3Gb for R579
- SAIX Local @ R190 for 10Gb
- Top Up 1Gb for R70

A Closer 2 package can then be added to maximise line rental @ R145 pm (if telephone calls are made). The R110 line rental must be paid so I have not included it above.

I am looking at getting DSL at home. The only advantage of taking Do broadband now would be the one bill from Telkom and possible additional bandwidth (not guaranteed) on TI accounts.

Would it be wise to go with ISP such as SolConnect or Axxess or would a Do broadband account + additional bandwidth be the way to go.

The other factor is that if Telkom do change their local bandwidth restrictions and capping, would this be only for TI accounts or would this be reffelcted in all SAIX resellers offerings?

Any suggestions from formites on which option to go for? I need about 5-6Gb international per month and about 10 Gb local.

Are you quite sure that the Telkom free router SIO offer is now over? My guess is that it will make a comeback before Christmas. That offer has been running since February or so. There are other advantages to staying with Telkom such as if your ADSL line does stop working due to say lightning damage etc. you can usually get a refund on your rental for the duration of the fault etc. I doubt that any other ISPs will offer this. They also offer the relaxed capping policy, free dialup and 300 minutes of T-Zone hotspot access. Their router offer was the best but as you say it may have now come to an end.

Called Do Broadband and they confirmed that the SIO with free modem is over. The other benefits like fault reporting and repair is something we don't really think about as most of the ISPs state that this will still be done by Telkom and could be charged for. It would be could to see what response times people are getting with Telkom faults on complete DSL packages supplied by other ISPs

Guess I just look at the Telkom Internet Sep capping stats and see what Telkom Internet does. Relaxed capping will definitely be included in my decision. I could also spend 5 hours in the airport a month to use up the hotspot access!

Got some eBucks laying around so the router cost is actually immaterial. I have Linsksys WRT54G + DD-WRT firmware and 9dbi aerials so all I need is an adsl modem.

Planning to sell off the iBurst unit (pretty good signal in Midrand 'cos I have LOS to tower 100-110Kb in evenings is standard- hopefully hey don't go bankrupt before i palm it off). However for R600 a month I could get 6Gb at 4Mbps for R554. Extra cash could go into local IS or SAIX accounts. Have a company tel line so line rental is immaterial.

Guys, I logged onto the Do Broadband site and they still reference the free modem on either self install or 24 month contract.

If you call them and speak to a consultant, they will tell you that the offer is expired.

Photon-Man, r u a telkom insider? Give us some more info on this extended free modem offer for SIO.

Take a look at photonman's 108Mbps R350 Bob router offer - this may also be of interest. This is probably cheaper than an ethernet modem.

Yes, the offer is gone. CSnoopy wrote them an email and got the same response. Check thread:

It's just the modem with SIO that's gone. If you sign a contract you still get one AFAIK.

I'm gonna go with WebAfrica (against Yotch advice)

Maybe google for routesentry. Once I get my adsl, that gonna be the first thing I'm doing.

@tjandies: My apologies when I saw the advert I just assumed that the router also contained an ADSL modem like many others do. You could look around on Bob for other offers etc. Cybersmart might be another possibility - I think they give a free 4-port ADSL router without a contract from what I remember. Their 384K prices are the cheapest available but the router isn't wireless though - not sure that their 4Mb/s prices are as good though.

I've consistently managed to get 4GB from my Do Broadband Level 2 over the last few months so I'm hoping that there won't be any changes to the capping system. Previously I used to get around 6-8GB.
