DSTV and wind?

And just to get it out the way before we get wise comments about beans, gas etc I am referring to meteorological wind :)

A quick question for all those that have satellite dishes and DSTV. Do you lose signal repeatedly whenever there is a fairly strong wind blowing? And I do not mean gale force here I just mean when the wind gets up. We'll lose picture for a little while, or briefly get the message saying signal was lost or get a brief freezing of the picture with "blocks".

Our dish is on top of a building so obviously it is fairly exposed to the elements but I was just wondering if it is normal or if we should look at moving the dish to another side perhaps. Is there anything else to do? It just makes watching DSTV when the wind is up a little frustrating... especially when Angelina Jolie is busy unbuttoning her top and it freezes! ;)

I reckon your dish might be slightly loose and it's being blown out of synch by the wind ......

Mine has never lost signal during wind only.
Only with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

+1 for loose dish maybe

Yeah, that is what I wondered.... but surely even if firmly attached it will still move in a strong wind? So is it not really normal?

So you reckon I just need to "tighten my nuts"? ;)

Loose nuts not withstanding... you may find that some vegetation is near to the line of sight that your dish uses, strong wind comes up and blows it into the way where usually it is just off to the side - say maybe a palm frond for instance that causes no issues until the wind starts whipping it around, in and out of your line of sight.

Nah, no risk of that. The dish is on the roof of a 15 storey building! ;) The nearest and tallest tree is probably only about 10 floors high.

The frustrating part is that this was a recent installation (less than 2 months) so I am considering calling the guy out again and mentioning this. But as stated I just wanted to make sure it is not common. Obviously my dish would get more wind so high up compared to ground level houses with vegetation to disperse the wind.

You'll probably find that the installer used the wrong bolts for a high rise or something :D

My dish is installed quite high(just above the roof), due to living in a dip and wind does cause signal interruptions.

What is your max signal strength and quality, when the wind is calm?

Communal systems are tricky, but should definitely not do that. I think you must get the installer out, to fix this. Send me a PM if you need more help.

What button do you press again to check? I have done it by mistake before! :)

Ok, found it. Signal level is bouncing around 60% and signal level between 90 and 97% now. The wind is not as strong as earlier.

Not communal. We have our own dish on the roof.

What size/type dish and what length of cable between dish and decoder? If it is a long cable run, the signal level might be very low. A little bit of movement would then cause breakup.

As shown above the signal level on the decoder is showing 60%. It is a fair bit of cable but not ridiculous I wouldn't think. We are on the 13th floor and the dish is on the roof two floors up. The dish is the standard size (if there is such a thing). Just the cheapy mild steel one but only about two months old.
