DStv bloodbath in South Africa — Compact subscribers join Premium leavers

MultiChoice's latest annual results have revealed a significant decline in customers on its DStv Premium, Compact, and Extra packages in South Africa in the past year.

The broadcaster reported a 4% loss in 90-day active subscribers in the Premium segment in South Africa from March 2021 to March 2022. This figure includes customers on its Premium and Compact Plus packages.

Next year's figures are then going to look even worse I'd imagine, since I'm sure these figures don't account for the subscriber loss due to their policy change (end of March 2022) on single device streaming.
 
If it wasn't for the incessant adverts, I would stay with them

A 75 minute National Geographic program has 28 mins of adverts. The program was interrupted 9 times, some advert breaks last 2 mins, some last 8 minutes

Then you get the reminders to pay

MC acting like they still have a monopoly and the streaming hiccups make it worse
 
Next year's figures are then going to look even worse I'd imagine, since I'm sure these figures don't account for the subscriber loss due to their policy change (end of March 2022) on single device streaming.
Also, you'd imagine more cancellations coming up with less people at home.

Packages that are too expensive and full of repeats, and a population increasingly under financial pressure on an almost monthly basis.

Lots of promises of a streaming service (which they had anyways!), which, when launched, wasn't much cheaper than putting up a dish and powering up a decoder.
You guys haven't innovated, you deserve to be under pressure from streamers. Welcome to your Kodak moment.
 
I imagine it's only going to get worse unless DStv realise copying UK SKY's business model for a decade or two isn't going to work for much longer.
 
Yeah the sport also starting to get borderline for me.

Those f'ing squeeze ads getting bigger and bigger and more frequent.

Leading indicators of a recession.
Maybe not as internationally media and streaming services were all increasing with so many at home. But the scheduled watching program thing is very yesteryear. It is sport (specifically in SA) that keeps them alive.
 
DStv said this was a reduced decline compared to the previous year, which saw an 8% drop from roughly 1.5 million to 1.4 million.

Ouch that is ridiculous, think there are NG shows on Disney

So, fun fact, a lot of those channel are played out from different providers and all MC does is localise the content. So they get a notification saying this ad break will be 5 min long and their system selects a bunch of ads that matches the timing as broadcast by the other provider. As such, they have a variety of MC adverts that spans set lengths of time that the system can select to fill the holes that is gets left by other actual adverts. And well, if they sold no advertising for that slot, you'll see a bunch of MC adverts only...

At least, that's how I remember it being explained.

They are called turn around channels yes, if it's not an actual dstv channel like mnet, the movie ones and kyknet type thing it's a TAC. So the stuff is sent from an external source they just fill the ad space with DSTV ads, sometimes though you'll see ads from other countries
 
People ditching DSTV for a higher speed fiber line...

I'm waiting for DSTV to try force govt to cancel fiber in ZA due to the massive job losses... their CEO is already off his rocker.

I always assumed the times I saw foreign adverts is when their ad server had some, ummm, unplanned maintenance.
