DStv cracked and pirated by techies; arrests made

Why do people mess up their careers with dodgy things?

First it was the MTN employees, now this.

Van Eeden said that it will be up to the police to decide what will happen to people and companies who purchased pirated services from the two syndicates

he he he he.... wonder what will their excuses be? :D

It is crazy indeed. From what we have heard these guys would have made a few thousands rand per month at most - not a good risk/reward trade-off. At least one person who was arrested has a well paying job...so strange indeed.

Am I the only one wondering what they will be charged with ? Will be interesting to see.

That's quite brazen.... Charging for the service means that means they must have had some kind of presence and made themselves very traceable.

I think they can be charged for distribution of content that does not belong to them, also for charging for it.

It all comes down to money.

Even the comment in the article :
Van Eeden said that the syndicates set up the DStv pirating service for pure commercial gain instead of merely doing it as a technical experiment.

It hints that this would not be as serious if they did not charge for the service.

Why would anyone want to willingly pirate DSTV???

EDIT: ... And that dude in the picture looks like he is sporting two of his very own satellite dishes there! :D

Maybe if it wasn't so stupidly expensive people could just pay the normal way?

I hope they get charged with failure to release the source used. It was on Linux after all, so I am sure they must have broken the GPL somewhere :)

I think thats very clever, not legal but is full of win ;) in a hacking point of you. Its to bad they exploited it and now are going to pay.

Tutorial please ;) Just kidding :D but I think DSTV is over priced and if it was not for SuperSport most people wouldnt have the service.

I love how some of the biggest all time pirates in SA (DSTV) get off with calling 5 people a piracy syndicate! :D

DSTV, you have been racketeering, hijacking, fleecing, and scallywagging the SA public for far too long now.

We know who the REAL pirates are.

I actually know of one of these subscribers, paying R100-00 p/m for the full bouquet - sent this article to him and he rushed home to unplug - haha.

Lately I have also noticed some out of place vehicles driving around the area with odd looking dome shapes on them and all have GP number plates. Reminds me of the old Post Office tracers in the "old" days. Maybe that's them and their on to him hehe

So they can hack DSTV encrypted signals - but not a soul can get PVR content off the PVR through the USB? :/
