New hardware - no details
smaller hard drive - no details
new remote - little details

Why not provide technical details - myBB is for technical people or not?
Where's iFixit/myBB teardown?

I don't think that there are any improvements at all. I think they just cheapened it. They are probably pushing their VOD technology. Now they ave a Showmax button - Wow. DTSV is becoming a waste of time.

I might be missing something here, the people that use Catch Up already now how much data they need, they won't care about the ~5GB this "new" compression will save them a month, it has a smaller HDD and a remote that lights up, which I guarantee anyone with the current Explora can buy separately.

Edit: The new A7 remote will also be able to be paired with all the current DStv decoders.

so basically, you could have just bought the remote extra, and keep the bigger storage space with the Explorer 1 which is always good to have, even if you dont make use of it.

Using H-265 HEVC instead of H-264?

Apparently yes it is HEVC H-265 in preparation for possible UHD transmission.

Where's iFixit/myBB teardown?

MCs standard operating procedure --- very little detailed technical info. They claim to have been able to make the HDD smaller because of the new compression used. Have cut back by half of the space available on the HDD for user recordings. The allocation towards CU has been increased.

New A7 remote, plenty of detail available on that
Motion-sensored back-lit buttons
Visual feedback when a button is pressed
Low battery detection
Use as a universal remote
Dedicated ShowMax button

Plus it is downward compatible with the Explora and the HD decoder, and because it is programmable, presumably some of the older decoders as well.

Will the new remote work on old Explora?

Yes

only if its in UHD then ill join you. Have to have 7de Laan in UHD :D

The decoder is UHD compatible but no sign yet of any UHD transmission over Africa.
As to CU having SABC stuff? Well there IS some already available on CU

Not according to my sources. Apparently, there have been quite a lot of complaints about the amount of data usage when an Explora is connected to the Internet. BUT that is in my opinion NOT the primary reason for implementing the new compression standard (HEVC), even if we have not been told what it is --- yet . Work it out for yourself.

Hint: New decoder, HEVC capable, new satellite IS 36, UHD channels available in the rest of the World -- 2+2+2 = 6.

Finally a DSTV rep on myBB :D

nope, just someone who keeps himself up to date on Satcomms and can then work out what MC is NOT saying when they make press statements ....

I have said on many fora in the past:

Rule 1: There are NO secrets in the satcomms business
Rule 2: IF you think you can keep a secret, refer to rule number 1.
