DStv False Advertising and Commercial Blackmail

A recent email announcement from DStv stated that ALL it's customers/subscribers would, from the 17/05/2017 have access to 4 new channels (138,140,195 & 135).

This statement however is untrue as subscribers still on the Select Bouquet (now not available to new subscribers) do not have access to these channels as well as some of the local newscasts.

It is almost as though Select subscribers are being "punished" for not changing to other packages and in our case we have retained it so that we can watch KyKnet. If we do change and want to watch KyKnet (144), we then have to choose the Extra Bouquet and pay an extra R254/month
.
So this is not only false advertising on behalf of DStv but also commercial blackmail for subscribers to pay if they want the extra channels, that according to DStv are available to ALL subscribers.

We trust that DStv will rescind this decision and treat Select subscribers as one of their normal customers.

Where's the e-mail and did you report it to ASA or what did you do?

The official press release on the 17th by MC does NOT use the word "ALL" anywhere.

But what you have to do with ALL MC press releases and emails is READ THE COMPLETE RELEASE before jumping to conclusions.

Paragraph 1 mentions what the he channels are and if you stop reading there, you will think that all their customers are going to get all 4 channels.

You have to read all the way to paragraph 4 before finding out which packages will get what. And then you will notice "select" is not mentioned because it is no longer a package available to all but only to those still on it in which case you will generally get the same as those on "Easy view".

So the only thing wrong here is you have failed to read the announcement properly.

Hello Geoff,

Please note I was very careful to check my facts before posting my original comments and as such I cannot be accused of "Failing to read an announcement properly" Unfortunately it looks like we cannot upload photo's to your site unless they are linked to an URL.
so that I could show you the wording.
I can forgive you for missing the reference to ALL however this is the first message that one sees when hovering the cursor over the Find out More box (this is under the heading"DSTV Customers get more Channels not SOME DStV customers get more channels" The wording that is evident when hovering on the Find out More states clearly "Available to ALL DStV Subscribers"
My point is still that subscribers who still have the Select Bouquets are not being treated fairly in having the additional programs that are available (in DStV's own words) to ALL subscribers.
I trust you will follow up this issue up with DStV.

DStv Newsletter: New channels now available to all DStv customers! NB This is the subject heading of the email, the wording clearly states "to ALL customers" When one then hovers over the Find out More box another message states "Available to All DStv Subscribers"

I have no idea what the email says. I am referring to the official press release. I don't get the newsletter via email but according to a friend that does get the newsletter, the content is pretty much the same as the press release. He had no difficulty in understanding who would get what on which packages.

Either way take it up with DSTV direct.

Geoff, I agree the email message is probably the same as the press release however as I have shown on my previous postings, I am sure most other readers understand that the word ALL with reference to customers and subscribers is just that. It does not say "SOME'' subscribers and customers. Hence I believe this is misleading advertising, even it further on in paragraph 4 in then mentions the packages.
My other point is why should Select Bouquet subscribers/customers be excluded from these additional programs. We have paid the increase in subscription fees and still do not receive anything extra as stated by DStV, when they announced the increases.

The increase is their annual increase its not for the extra channels.

Geoff & MauMau, I suspect you guys must work for DStv :) Let's just accept that DStV, who are a monopoly, treat their customers badly and dictate THEIR terms.
Case Closed.

No I don't work for DSTV. I just don't like unjustified claims being made by anyone against anyone else. And I suggest that you probably did get channels 195 and 311as did we on Easyview.

Select is not part of the official DSTV bouquets (think it was a Vodacom sponsored option). They allow you to remain on it, but why should they add any channels to it.
I wish I can get back on it for the Kyknet channel though.

Not that it matters anymore to OP, but here is what happened with the announcement of the new channels on DSTV released on the 17th May.

Two newsletters went out, one with the banner announcement referring to "NOW AVAILABLE to All DStv customers!", and a little later a correction newsletter went out with the banner changed to "DStv customers get more channels!".

So someone in MC picked up the issue and corrected it on the same day. Both banners refer to the same official press release.
