And you can watch Full HD 1080p Formula 1 on a free channel, live.

Wow. Weird. F1 is not available in HD anywhere in the world. This has been an on-going consumer rant, not just in SA. It's a decision taken by Ecclestone, Mosely and co, who hold the broadcasting rights, and have been hell-bent on broadcasting in the most accessible (read cheapest) format possible.

Won't re-iterate the 1080p comment. It's not a broadcast standard anywhere in the world due to bandwidth limitations. A few cable broadcasters here and there are experimenting with 1080p, but the bit-rates have been so low as to make the benefit negligible.

It is shown in HD (1080i), but I imagine that it is an upscale of the normal feed. Looks way way way better on a big tv than the same footage shown on the parallel SD channel (so either way I know which one I would like to watch tonight) and about a million times better than the analog one on an LCD. F1 is suprising backwards, but the point here is the free HD distribution (rather than the filming). It seems like I have just caused havoc here

It is very sad that its not broadcast in HD.:sick::sick:

I was at the Singapore Gp last year and the video shown on the BIG screen was in HD. Did some searching on the web, it seems that the F1 is filmed in HD at most races but that FOM is not transmitting it in HD. BBC says they are hopeful for the 2010 season.

But I found this article that says that Abu Dhabi might be transmitted in HD. If it is, I hope DSTV will show it in that format.

Here's holding thumbs.:):):)

NO NOT 1080i it is 1080p which is not like 720p at all. And they are not subscription services, nor do you need to pay a tv license. It is sort of like eTV. The sport commentators are actually fairly intelligent too (unlike the rubbish SABC et al used to drag up...5fm djs haha).

All channels have a HD version (some have 720p as well as 1080p versions for the different tvs), you just tune into the appropriate one.
Hooray for competition. Wonder if we'll ever get it here?
