DStv Now launches LG smart TV app

How is the streaming quality?
I've been using the Samsung version and while the app is pretty usable DSTV still has a lot to learn about streaming. The quality of the stream and amount of buffering seems to be largely dependent on what you're watching and when. During peak 6pm to 10pm I've regularly encountered issues with not being able to watch uninterrupted. Regular buffering, poor resolution (think Minecraft) and then errors while streaming. This applies to both live and catchup. When it works properly it's great. The other thing I notice is that the TV app is more prone to these issues than the mobile version.

I know if I call to complain they'll immediately blame network but I'm on 100Mbps fibre and can, at the same time, steam 4K on Netflix or YouTube without any issues.

App is schit. Pretty much unusable because there's no scroll bar to move left/right.

And even if there was - are you seriously expected to scroll horizontally through all the channels?

I've got this model 55UH617V which is a 2016 model.

Guess I'm outta luck then

Installed it last night and it seems to work okay. Makes my tv box redundant.

Always good to have a droid box, the capabilities are ...............................................

Yep. I have two of them. Other one runs on the not so smart tv.
I will keep it for now.

Here are a couple of things you probably thought of already.

Given you have 100mbps fibre, lets look at the Wi-Fi infrastructure, the ONT (fibre box) will feed into a second router, here you ideally want your TV to be using wireless AC at 5GHz away from the rest of the wireless traffic, most of which uses Wireless N at 2.4 GHz, the router config will allow you to specify an SSID network name for the wireless AC as well as one for your Wireless N traffic. Reserve the Wireless AC for your streaming in the house.

That way when everyone starts using facebook and games consoles the wireless streaming won't get congested with everyones traffic or multiple streaming sessions, this is a good start to preventing any issues. More advanced Wi-Fi use cases will require someone to look more carefully at how your Wi-Fi is setup in your home and look at investing more in the Wi-Fi routers or setting them up correctly to keep the traffic apart

Given that Netflix works OK in 4K, you can look at YouTube using the "stats for nerds" (options beetle icon) to see what connection speed that is getting as a start point, also you can use the following three 4K test videos to see the bandwidth required for the resolution you are displaying, DSTV now uses much less bandwidth than 4K, but be sure using youtube stats for nerds that you actually are getting 4K, because it will step down to much lower resolutions if your wifi is congested.

The following figures are the connection speed required in Mbps for each Codec and resolution

Today 15th October 2018, i checked my LG smart TV, 2017 model and there is no DSTV Now app. I called DSTV and the Agent checked the system and told she can only see Samsung. she then said LG TVs are not activated yet. Anyone with the App on an LG TV yet?

Hi all,

Explorer HD gave up the ghost (2nd hard drive already and irritated with the Fee to swap out ) so installed the app on LG 65SJ80. Installed and works ok - but can’t pause Live Tv. I am guessing that the Tv doesn’t have enough memory to store the program( as is possible on the iPad app).

Does anyone know if there is a way to add storage to the TV- or should I just buy a tv box that has Hard drive and can then pause and download? If not, which media box/ tv box is recommended.

Thanks in advance for assistance.
