You mean per decoder. Most people only need one but even for two it should be cheaper.

No, those packages are per TV (or display unit, whatever you want to call it).

Indeed, but can a non-business homeowner really apply for one of those packages ?

Personally, however, I would only go for a sports package for R200pm. Can be limited, just need F1, Rugby, Cricket.

In the meantime I will do without.

For Rugby look at using the RugbyPass app. Streaming of all rugby matches.
For F1 look at Sling app. About US$20 a month which include ESPN2 where all the matches are shown.

Depending on where you are you might need to use a DNS service to access these, but these are legit in the app store streaming options that don't really cost a lot compared to Multichoice.

The article doesn't say we can't buy the package(s) at home. Saying it is office to businesses isn't a reason and it doesn't look like the article author bothered asking

Just don't call it "klikaas"

I watched a movie at Ster-Kinekor yesterday, and I see that DSTV has engaged in a big advertising drive. They had this long advert about how DSTV Premium is the best place for all of your entertainment needs.

They keep clinging to this sinking ship. Try a new business model or you will die, DSTV.

It's like polishing a turd and hyping it up trying to sell it to the public. LOL.

Those Business packages are per TV - so how many TV's do you have at home ?

For example, 3 * R349 is not so cheap any more.
I doubt that someone would want to watch 3 different sports channels in the same house? If there was a sports only package available then multichoice would be the biggest loser...all the series and movies that they show are freely available. Nobody would need the other useless channels that show yearly repeats daily. Local content is fair, but I guess we only really watch it because it comes with the package. So that's the real reason why they NOchoice lol

Remember that fibre/bandwidth is still expensive in SA and most people can't even plug in a HDMI cable.
So with those 2 factors DSTV will still have support for a long time to go.

But I do laugh at how often they advertise themselves on their own channels. You pay R900 a month for DSTV and 10 out of every 30 minute problem is them telling you what a great decision that was.

To be honest with you, I think if consumers had the choice they would all opt for a Stay Essential package to have the sport access and if they have the need for series and movies they would choose a decent internet and streaming service package for the best value for money. I understand that DSTV wants to offer its viewers a range of content, however the current packages on offer dont give the viewer much choice.

DSTV should know the reason why people are leaving in droves is because they are just too expensive. They are milking the cows (us!) who want to watch channel 201 - to have that you need the Premium package for an ordinary user. We are moving over to Netflix and finding another way to watch sport.
DSTV's pathetic online website & app's quality just does not compare to Netflix and others.....
They have had the monopoly long enough - it is time to bring their prices down or suffer the consequences of even less people watching them....
Now this news is just another nail in their coffin.... giving out prime sport at ridiculous prices to guest houses...

Because a display unit is typically a tv and decoder. Nothing stopping you from splitting it to 2 tv's and the Explora even has dual HDMI and RCA outputs. So it's per decoder and not per tv.

Blame that partly on Icasa. Pay tv has to make up 75% (correct me if the figure is wrong) of the revenue from subscriptions. So it's either lower the price of adverts to fit more in to the hour or show their own ads.

This article raises more questions that answers.
Indeed it does. Since guest houses are informal businesses what's stopping me from claiming I'm running one?

Technically you can do it, but not legally. Legally, it's per TV.

In my previous job we had two displays displaying the same stuff, but in different directions.

One decoder, but we had to pay twice.

It was a bank, so we didn't want to do anything illegal.

This is a load of crap!
Imagine a supermarket charging different prices for the same loaf of bread according to who is going to eat it where - cheaper for kids school lunchbox, more for restaurants and top price for home consumption in a wealthy suburb.

You would be surprised to know supermarkets actually do do that. Not on bread but on everything else.
