DStv Premium loses thousands of subscribers

The number of households that subscribe to high-end DStv packages declined by 8% in South Africa over the past year, according to MultiChoice’s latest financial results.

This is a continuation of a trend that started in 2016 when Netflix launched globally.

Initially, it only caused a slow-down in DStv Premium subscriber growth, but by 2018 MultiChoice revealed that its most profitable subscriber base was shrinking.

Huh? So yesterday they had a record increase and to day loses? Lack of actual research or just peddling more for NoChoice?

The increase in subscription revenue was due to 1.4 million DStv subscribers being added across Africa between March 2020 and March 2021.

90-day active subscribers grew by around 515,000 subscribers, while 848,000 new customers were added in the rest of Africa.

Confusing, the one day, they're all positive and making money, the next negative and losing subs.
its all about numbers and their target market. They dont care about losing premium subscribers because they have millions more to make up the difference on there cheaper packages.

Ah hell, is it that time of the year again where we get to read obvious and repeat articles (I never read this one, but did read a few similar articles in 2019)...

This is where some people here miss the point, Multichoice has a target market that will keep on sustaining it despite the drop in premium subscribers.

The notion of premium subscriptions holding up Multichoice is long dead. Business has always been about specifying and cleverly targeting your market.

Yet they made more money than ever? I had long suspected that premium subscribers are not as important as they think they are.
Overall revenue is only up by 4% which is basically the inflation rate, so they made no new money in real terms.
Operating and net profits saw huge jumps which can only be ascribed to drastic cost cutting measures and possibly savings on payments that did not have to be made for sports games etc.
I.e. I don't think it is sustainable.

They're not. MC has this weird stance of lumping specific genres and language offerings as premium channels. Nowhere is language specific programs considered premium content but rather an add on. Sport is premium.

DSTV should start selling openserve copper land lines.

In all honesty they could have easily pivoted to becoming a fibre provider back in 2017/8.
It was/is obvious that entertainment is going online.

They'll probably milk Africa for all it's worth...

Their model is outdated. Yet they don't show their Premium subs for the last 3 years. Why?
