DStv's downward spiral in South Africa

Viewership of DStv's most popular programmes has plunged in the past year and is at its lowest in six years, data from the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRCSA) reveals.

The BRCSA publishes monthly TV audience measurement (TAMS) reports based on Nielsen's Peoplemeter technology. This pulls data from devices plugged into the TV sets or decoders of a representative sample of the country's television viewers.

An affordable sports only bouquet might get some of their subscribers back again.
Agree, but they also need to up their game on the streaming side, quality of stream (1080P maybe) and also buffering and app bombing out. I also have the F1TV app and that is fantastic.

The issue is the sports rights are what keeps that a pipe-dream. The entertainment portion of DSTV isn't as pricey as the sports part.

People watch DSTV because they have no other choice. More internet choices means people leave.
Not in my house.
We have 200/200 and were going to move over to Prime Video and drop down to the R400 DSTv package which cuts our current cost in half.
Most of my family refuse to use streaming because "DSTv makes it so easy to just find shows."

??????????????????????????????????????

That has been punted by the public for years, but DStv has an excuse for that anyways so doubtful it'll ever happen.

I only know of a few groups that still pay for DSTV:
Old people who are afraid of new tech
Big sports fans
Businesses who stream to TV's in the office
Holiday accommodation

Many of these are in decline, and I suspect the sports group is by far the largest remaining group of subscribers. Thing is the streaming crowd know how lucrative sports can be and are now starting to directly compete for those rights. When that happens DSTV's days are numbered I feel. One thing I have to give them credit for is the excellence that is contained in super sport. They have collected good skills and commentators there so if they do start losing rights why not outsource that side of the business. Let Netflix pay Super Sport to film, produce, and commentate games and Netflix or a sports specific streamer just take responsibility for streaming it into the actual homes. Would be a pity to lose that skill set and those jobs from an SA perspective.

There is only so many times one can watch S1 E1 of Law and Order, Chicago Med, PD etc. The only New programming is Sports and News which you can stream in most cases. So Why would you want or need to stay with an organisation that rips you off. Very happy they are “Tail Spinning”. As others have said MC doesn’t care about their customers. The “Take it or leave it” attitude has moved nicely to the “leave it” part. RIP MC

After nearly 30 years of watching F1 on Dstv, via a TV and then on DSTV now, seeing my first race on F1TV was nothing short of a revelation.
How, I asked myself, can F1TV jump out of the blocks and get it right first time, while DSTV, after decades of trying, not even manage a working, buffer-free HD stream?
F1TV should get into other sports like soccer and rugby: they'd make a killing.

I have the Xioami tv box and the app was working fine until an update, now you the channels but it won't play. Install uninstall multiple times. it is certified google tv software

Holiday accommodation
That is a interesting point as SO and I once or twice a month travel around our area and stay overnight at a lot of places and all of them always have DSTV

Until last weekend.
Place we booked at actually had a smart TV with Netflix
Was quite a surprise

So soon maybe DSTV may even lose that market.
