DStv will go out of business if regulations changed

MultiChoice is taking ICASA to court over the regulator’s inquiry into the pay TV market.

ICASA is currently holding public hearings on the Draft Sports Broadcasting Services Amendment Regulations, which look at how South Africans can access national sporting events and how minority and developmental sport receives exposure.

Multichoice: We want the regulator to regulate Netflix to prevent them from competing with us.
Multichoice: We want the regulator to remove encryption from the government set-top boxes to prevent competition.
Regulator: We want Multichoice to have competition in sports broadcasting and will use legislation to force it.

ICASA does realise that the only reason DSTV is the sole provider for a lot of the sport is because they can afford the licenses right? It's not like sports rights are cheap, perhaps that's what the regulator should look at.

My Humble view is that ICASA normally backtracks when legal action is instituted.

ICASA does not employ capable Attorneys & Lawyers to fight these guys.

The regulators job is to regulate and force competition.

The business case must be made up by the companies themselves.

Multichoice achieved dominance because too many ANC comrades were having private meetings with ICASA and telling them how things should be done. Off course with a few rands to a few ANC guys this gave them the monopoly they needed which they were allowed to push higher prices and make super profits and they built Naspers which is a giant today. Naspers made their money from Multichoice and M-Net now that it is time for competition to really set in they crying foul.

You raped South Africans over the years Multichoice.

Pay Back time.

MyBB is sponsored by Naspers . . . .

Drops mic....

Walks off the stage...

Hahahahahaha best joke ever XD

Yes a multi billion rand company will go bankrupt over night if their monopoly is slightly threatened ...

On a serious note at most they will be slightly inconvenienced but in the long run they will have to start innovating again and give their customers better packages and services instead of just seeing them as a cash cow.

How did SA Rugby manage before DSTV came along? Quite alright as I recall

The SABC had money to pay for the rights? They also didn't charge as much as they do now.

They're not cheap because it's a bidding war for it. Most of the ICASA changes are good.

So DStv is arguing that being monopolistic is core to their business viability. Shareholders should take note of that.
