Going to Durban in 2 weeks' time.

Since we want to stay on the Platinum Mile, which of these two is better ? Or is there no serious difference in quality between the two ?

I was surprised to find that the rates for the Protea Edward were slighty lower than the Garden Court.

Why do you want to stay in town?

Can you book and then cancel once seeing the spots? They are virtually right next to each other.

garden court marine parade has the pool on the 30th floor

I nearly sh@[t] myself many many years ago when I went into that pool and realised there was a glass "window" at the bottom and you could see the street below. I was only 6 at the time. I panicked and almost drowned!

Nice for the bambino to be right on the beach and walking distance from UShaka.

Take the edward
I have had the misfortune to stay in the garden court.
The Edward is a very old hotel, with decent sized rooms. The garden court's rooms are good for pigeons only.

Avoid the Edward. The crime in the area is ridiculous. Last time I stayed there the fire alarm went off and there was not a single staff member in sight. Turned out to be a false alarm.

Probably better to not stay at the beachfront full stop ..... the crime is ridiculous.

UShaka is about 2-3km away via a route where you have to dodge shady characters.

If it was me I would stay in Umhlanga or Ballito and take a drive to UShaka rather. Is this purely holiday or business as well where you have to be close to town?
