[Our mayor will] give them assurance that the situation has stabilized and law enforcement is being deployed in all hotspot areas including industries affected," he said.

This SOB is in no position to give assurances. What we can assure is that when these uncoot looters decide to attack again, they will definitely hit the toyota plant. All because some "clever "**** will read this article and say they need to burn toyota because they investing billions in SA

What happened in Durban last week is culturally unheard of for the Japanese, being one of the most honest nations in the world. While staying probably does have its financial incentives (people are not going to stop buying cars any time soon), it's going to take a lot to keep their trust and not explore their options to potentially relocate.

sure the mayor will do some danging and singing and try to beg them to stay,
but Toyota probably already has plans to ship out, and leave SA.

If Toyota chooses to believe an ANC cadre with the embers still smouldering from last week...

Uhm, this is not about giving reassurances. Only good long-term governance can assure stability, or in the very least insure mitigation. Contingencies in SA at this moment in time are unpredictable.

I've heard that Toyota has purchased in the South of the Metro for a parts factory a few years back. So far there's no movement in the manufacturing of this plant, if it wasn't already that plan will surely be scrapped now

Actually if you read the stuff from Toyota themselves, they aren't looking to leave SA anytime soon. They want assurances and plans etc.

An entity like Toyota doesn't make a decision to leave a country or location on a whim... They've invested hundreds of millions of dollars and wouldn't throw all that away lightly.

so they want lies and promises, okay, guess that makes their shareholders happy.

a company as big as Toyota has a lot invested in SA agreed, but they have the ability and foresight, to say screw this sinking ship, lets go somewhere else, if they keep seeing the writing on the wall.

all I'm saying, is they have plans, and might suddenly decide to pull the rug from under Sinking Ship SA, and go someplace else entirely.
begging and pleading for them to stay wont make the case.

"[Our mayor will] give them assurance that the situation has stabilized and law enforcement is being deployed in all hotspot areas including industries affected," he said. <-- Until the next time and they sit back whilst the masses storm the gates of Toyota.
Other manufacturers have taken note of this you useless lot. They'll be wondering the same thing. And when the automotive manufacturers leave causing job losses there, what the fark do you think will happen to component manufacturers and their jobs? Got to start thinking a little bit further down the road here guys!

Yet Toyota have a very well established market in SA. Afaik this is their biggest plant in the southern hemisphere.

While the ship have already sunk, they can still make a lot of money here for the foreseeable future, opposed to taking the alternative gamble of selling up and spending millions of dollars trying to enter a market perhaps dominated by other car manufacturers.

If anything, Toyota is thinking about its long term strategy, which may or may not only realise in the next 10 to 20 years.

Toyota must have lost billions as well as Samsung and other major companies.

Maybe 10s to a few hundred million maybe...

Samsung and other FMCG entities would largely have the stock insured whilst its in their supply chain so technically won't lose much from that point of view.

If Toyota moves, it will out of the country. There is no chance they'd risk something going wrong in a country that is this volatile. WC works in some respects. Not all. But from a Japanese perspective, it is still the same country. if contagion happens, they have wasted billion. So, no chance.
