A group of Durban pensioners who witnessed an armed robbery at a Post Office in Lamontville sprang into action, apprehending two of the suspects.
Three robbers targeted the Post Office at 10:00 on Wednesday where about 200 pensioners had gathered for their monthly pension pay-outs.
The gunmen held up staff at gunpoint, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said on Thursday.
"They forced the manager and staff to open the safe and they stole two bags containing cash. A group of senior citizens gathered and chased the suspects and managed to apprehend two men."
One armed suspect, who was in possession of the stolen cash, managed to flee into nearby bushes, Gwala said.
"No shots were fired and no injuries were reported. The suspects aged 26 and 28 were placed under arrest and will appear before the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of business robbery."
