Durban trip Advice

I would say so.......

Southbroom is where you want to be, if you want an escape, but close to civilisation, but with plenty to things to do ...
That is the answer if you insist on going to KZN.

Southbroom, Marina Beach, Trafalagar area. Blue flag beaches, smaller crowds, less turds in the water, smaller chance of getting mugged. Margate itself I'd avoid.

They have done a fairly good job cleaning the place up but nothing what it used to be like though

Gave it bit of thought.

Gateway has play area setup by the old food court area normally around this time. Upstairs by the cinema is a play area too.

There's a park by the hotel at the back nothing fancy

Cornubia has padel and I'm sure I saw some sort of play area.

Galleria has games and an ice rink ,but it's plastic. Opposite side of checkers is decent otherwise it's riff Raf.

New Germany has a place called Laceys toys ,never been in but I'm told it's pretty good shop.

Beachfront from ushaka to Suncoast has bike rentals is you want to cycle along the promenade.both sides had the rental last time I was there.

Promenade now extends all the way to the pier so you can take your kids to check out the ships, the beach on that side is fairly decent ,water quality is on and off. Stick to the beachfront road to ushaka via the town road is rough.

Shongweni is a great farmers market with a mini train and play area for the kids, great food and great vibe and decent stuff for sale not china mall stuff. You can also go on a 4x4 trip to the waterfall there.

Giba gorge is great out hiking ,biking park with a play area too, very foresty and outdoors

The problem with Ballito is with the exception of Gateway and Cornubia all the places are a long drive especially with the road works Margate/Trafalgar is even worse in terms of distance.

The most central place to reach those places with still decent and swimable beaches is the Toti area.

Forgot to add the umgeni bird park. Never been but might be enjoyable. Should actually go myself

Toti also has these neat little rockpool tidal pool things that you can swim in like a sort of pool in the ocean. Hightide they get washed over

Treasure beach in the bluff has nice rock pools the kid can play in and look for sea creatures. Not sure of the water quality there. But at low tide it's pretty cool.

Iv heard of a hole in the wall place at salt rock. Been meaning to check it out. I see on Google maps they have a tidal pool there too

@Pho3nix - did you go to KZN at all ?
Nope. Ended up doing Sun City which I am doing again in Jan.
Had a few flights around when I was planning this and my little person would have been a terror on the plane. Places within 1-3 hours drive are my preference for the moment but I did share a lot of what I got here with a friend with slightly older friends.

We have been there couple of times. First time was more than 10+ years ago (don't recall which year) and it was the best visit. There was a bird show and lot of crowd.

Worst was in 2022 but it was shortly after the floods so they took hit. Hardly anyone except us and 1 other family - on a Saturday. Lots of empty enclosures, smelly due to lack of water etc.

Fair enough. 3 year olds are way easy to entertain though. Now, son is 7+ so in 3-4 years time, be prepared for 'I am bored' uttered every few minutes unless engaged in some activity ALL THE FLIPPING time.

 No complaints but I really don't recall having said 'I am bored' and I will stick to that coz my parents are not there anymore to say otherwise.

I totally agree I would avoid Margate but will obviously go to for the eateries and shopping.

I would also add the hiking & bird watching spots in and around Mt. Edgecombe and Durban North.

In an interesting turn of events; might actually do Durban in Jan. Will read through the thread again on where to avoid the turds
