The Netherlands is on the cusp of making working from home a legal right in a radical move that experts say could be followed across Europe.

The Dutch parliament has approved a law to establish working from home as a legal right for certain jobs.

Although the move still needs sign-off from the Dutch senate before it can come into force and it is not yet clear how exactly the law would work in practice, employment experts said it could cause a ripple effect in other European Union countries.

Soon...very soon I'll be able to stop hearing the whinging of colleagues during retros who feel "lonely" and missing "face time".

And I'm going to quite ****ing enjoy the moment I get to decline and delete that annoying "Orifice Day! :D" calendar entry...

Worked from home from 1980 to 2016. No boss hovering about, plenty of free time, no stuffy office with sick people too scared to stay away

What did I miss? Nothing I can think of. Was able to spend time with kids growing up.

Drawbacks: Had staff I had to look after, much more besides paying their salaries. Bit of a bind sometimes but not too serious. Had a few people who wanted to become “partners” but not keen to put in much effort.

But… highly recommended, lots less stress, better lifestyle, nice environment

I only go to office on days that I know few people will in or if I really have pitch for meeting. WFH so much better than office. One more reason to move back to my father land.

Most of the farmers are working from home. It's a disgruntled few who have to commute to the distribution centers in the morning to protest who are upset.
I mean, didnt the police shoot at them.
With live ammunition ?
And isnt it a pretty big deal ?

Oh, right...yes they are still investigating if the police action was appropriate. The tractor driver though was a 16 yo arrested for attempted murder but he's been set free.

The Dutch headlines are:
- Borris Jonson is a clown
- **** you farmers, from Monday they must use less manure/fertilizer
- 16.000 suitcases are stuck at Schipol because of a staff shortage

So anyway, WFH...

Do you think that government should be allowed to interfere so radically in the economy though?

I mean imagine if it happened here - we'd be hearing about communism and stuff.

I don't follow. They're giving people the right to legally WFH especially during a time where
- gentrification is pushing people away from the hubs
- fuel costs are stupid high
- non-EV vehicles are being squeezed out
- EV vehicles are in short supply and expensive
- public transport faces a shortage of stuff so fewer trains are running
- winter is coming, corona is starting to make headlines again

Can only be better for h to e economy if more people WFH. The only potential negative I can think of is the mental health of people.

It's no joke, I used to get the flu at least 3-4 times a year, always someone coming into the office sick. Been working from home for 4 years now and I've only been sick once when my daughter came home sick from school.
