DVB-T2 is the official digital terrestrial broadcasting standard of South Africa

Finally...

Now those bloody monkeys that were pushing that other standard can sod off

So typical of the incompetent ANC.

1st deadline : November 1, 2008
2nd deadline : 1 November 2011
New deadline: December 2013

At least there's a international deadline in 2015.
Sounds just like LLU.

Soon I will be able to cancel my TV license as my TV is analogue.

I wonder when we can expect the first services to be rolled out. I read somewhere that it might be as soon as May?

Implications of DVB T2

Digital Divident

Yup! We can all throw the DVB-T tuners away

Help please. I am a luddite in this area. What does this mean for normal people -
I have just bought a Samsung C750 LCD TV.
I have a (Non HD) DSTV tuner
I also have a TopTv tuner.
Implications?

None for you.

All your tech is focused on DVB-S (satellite). This article is about DVB-T (Terrestrial).

DVB-T2 is an advance over DVB-T, which was previously being trialled in ZA. Unfortunately, DVB-T receivers such as the USB sticks, etc that folks may have bought are not able to receive DVB-T2 signals, and as such, are worthless.

How many millions are they spending on this switch over ?

They should have just went with DVB-S cause we've been having it for 16 years.

It has to rain very hard before DVB-S craps out. On the contrast DVB-T is out of reach for most people because they do not have good enough signal quality with their current aerials. DVB-T is too expensive if you compare it to DVB-S.

An estimate for STB's (set top boxes/a.k.a decoder) was done : ~ R3.3 billion
If the government provides a 50% subsidy for the STBs that's R1.65 billion out of the tax payers pockets.
And that's just for the STBs!
Not included are all the infrastructure upgrades like transmitters, antenna's, etc.

Just wait and see Sentech and the SABC come crying to the coffers for donations to upgrade their equipment ...

Long battle ended! What remains to be seen is whether or not the Dec 2013 deadline will be met. After all, there are 2 years in between before the ITU deadline of 2015 can be met - gives decision makers room for further postponements!

Thanks for the estimates Paul_S. Now if you compare that with the money Sentech already spent on Vivid, their DVB-S product that shares PAS7/10 with DStv, it boggles the mind why they even bothered flushing even more money down the drain on DVB-T.

We don't need terrestrial television broadcasts.
