My opinion - it's outdated, ancient technology. Besides VHS, DVD is on it's way out as well. Why do you need such a device?

Well some older people still have lots of VHS tapes and it would be good to be able to record the old VHS tapes direct to a DVD.

Still easier to just use a good tv card .. then record the VHS to MPG with a regular VHS machine, and then rip it to Xvid .. much better way to store... and less cost for blank DVD's ;)

Cheapest/quickest way is to buy an HDD/DVD Recorder and plug in your VHS machine, then copy from VHS-to-DVD (or HDD)

I agree with the TV capture card route, however, some people don't have the full know-how or the right PC specs to do this.

Only works on home vids. If your trying to copy original movies then you need a channelizer - use to have one. They help with the signal and prevent that fading.

But what is nice with a PVR is that you can set chapters, titles, edit ... etc and then rip to DVD or flash drive. I love my PVR

I never knew that.
In all honesty, all my retail VHS tapes that I couldn't replace on retail DVD were captured to DVD HDD recorder, and I didn't notice any difference in the quality or fading.
I used the shortest s-video and audio cables I could find, approx. 40cm, to minimise signal loss between the units.
