It is possible to create your own web site and host it on you MyWirless connection with Dynamic DNS as well as your own mail server. Any one tried this yet ?

Web site works fine, but mail server will be a problem for incoming if you don't have an upstream spooler.

DO NOT put your dynamic dns name as your MX record, you WILL loose mail.

Rather setup an upstream spooler, and pull the mail down by using something like fetchmail, or better, ETRN

That works fine as well, why would you loose mail so long as your mail server is always on?

When you IP changes, for the few minutes that the DNS entry is still not updated, mail will route to the previous IP.

If the next guy with that IP is running a mail server, he'll get mail that's not meant for him and his MTA will bounce the message.

Consider the situation where you got disconnected (tower problems, loss of signal) and you can't reconnect.

Best way to get mail on a dynamic dns host, is using ETRN.

With ETRN you can basically tell your upstream spooler, to start dequeuing via SMTP to your IP.

ETRN is available on most major MTA packages, even *cough*MS Exchange*cough*

For a few seconds, generaly SMTP servers retry delivery.

I've been host my site on MyW. At co.za I set my NS1 to a dyndns of my own machine and NS2 to secondary.org. Wrote a little proggie that refresh the nameserver I run on my machine and secondary.org. This way I don't pay anyone anything (except co.za)

I've thought about the potential to loose mail, but if someone runs a mail server and gets my spam it's his choice.

Yup, hosted a couple of small (very low usage) private webservers (using virtual hosts in Apache to host two different websites/domains :), worked well with dyndns.org and dynsite to update the dynamic dns. Haven't tried mail though, don't need it.

I have been running "mail enable" for a few weeks now and every thing is ok. Not had any problems so far.

Hi,

You will find that there are some firewalls that support dynamic DNS providers, that auto update for free.

Please note I do not speak on behalf of Sentech and am NOT in sales :) From personal experience and what I know about the design of the MyWireless network and products I would not recommend that anyone host business critical (or any other kind of important) mail at the end of a MyWireless service.

However Sentech do offer various mail hosting solutions which really complement the service. This includes spooling of mail when your mail server is unavailable etc. In fact many ISPs offer e-mail solutions which would complement the MyWireless service at very reasonable rates. These often require no capital outlay on the customer’s side as the platforms exist and are maintained by the Service Provider.

I strongly recommend that if you are using MyWireless and require a mail platform handling business critical or other important mail that you evaluate the cost of one of these mail hosting options. The design of the initial MyWireless services is not intended for customers with stringent critical hosting requirements on the customer side.
