Goodbye free Makro vouchers for e-waste

The E-Waste Recycling Authority (ERA) has suspended its "The Future Started Yesterday" campaign, which rewarded people for handing in their electric waste with Makro vouchers up to R600 per person per day.

The ERA had originally planned to run the campaign over two weekends — 14 & 15 October and 21 & 22 October — but has cancelled it for the coming weekend.

FML already lined up a few items for this weekend

I went last week Saturday to get rid of some E-Waste. I hope they do it again soon, would love some more vouchers. Unfortunately, they created a tendency that you can get value for your e-waste so I doubt people will be so willing when they don't get a "reward".
However, the system they had in place was very tedious, so hopefully there is more opportunities in future where you don't have to stand in a que for 2.5 hours.

Paying to save the planet really doesn't work.

Urban mining here we come. There are so many minerals in these things that it makes sense to rather extract them from old electronics than to rip them from the ground.

As I said in the previous article, too many people were scamming. The very same people who come on this platform to moan about government corruption.

I don't think scamming was the problem. The sheer volume caught them by surprise. When I spoke to the guy at Silver Lakes he said they'd done more than they expected for the entire weekend on Saturday, and by noon Sunday they'd already done more than Saturday. We're talking a good couple of million just at this one location.
