Our company observed Earth Hour yesterday (because today is a Saturday) by turning off all non-essential electrics like lights, air-cons etc.
So obviously a bunch of people switched off their PCs as well, took their lunch hour at that time and had a braai without seeing the irony.

Less extreme version of sleeping during Earth hour and firing up all the lights come midnight when they're normally off. Basically, you're cancelling out the saving of energy by taking lunch during that time.

I assume this is the irony. I think Earth hour is great for awareness but I'm light in power usage all the time so can't be bothered.

No, what does it achieve?
Maybe changing your mindset?

Like meat free Monday doesn't really achieve anything, but people maybe realize they don't actually need to eat meat with every meal and think about where their food comes from. Maybe putting off all your **** for a few hours will get you out in the garden, going for a walk or just make you aware that we get far too used to consuming the whole time without ever considering the impact we have on this planet. Even with the water restrictions at the moment some people just don't care at all about even thinking about saving water. So yeah...maybe raising awareness is better than raising no awareness.

Took lunch and had a braai? They are saving power... What's the irony?

If they took lunch at the normal time, outside of Earth hour, they would've saved "double" the power for the day.

It's not the most ironic thing to be honest :/

Or that... :D

I just found it ironic that they switched off everything and after the company went as green as possible for one hour (trumpeting the fact everywhere they could find an empty spot to stick a poster), a huge cloud of smoke hung over HO during that time, making it look like Morty's backyard.

Not that I have a problem with that. I intend to do it myself tomorrow.

Ok. I didn't know earth hour was about climate change and not electricity use...
Opening paragraph of the link in OP:

World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) Earth Hour – now in its tenth year – is the world’s largest demonstration of support for action on climate change.

Earth Hour was founded by WWF in Sydney in 2007, and is designed to increase awareness about energy consumption and environmental issues including rising temperatures and destruction of habitats on a global scale.

No, what does it achieve?

"Earth Hour does not purport to be an energy/carbon reduction exercise, it is a symbolic action. Therefore, we do not engage in the measurement of energy/carbon reduction levels for the hour itself. Earth Hour is an initiative to encourage individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take accountability for their ecological footprint and engage in dialogue and resource exchange that provides real solutions to our environmental challenges. Participation in Earth Hour symbolises a commitment to change beyond the hour."
