So I've downloaded the XXLPQ ROM and followed various guides which are pretty straight forward, like the one at:
http://www.theroot.za.net/?p=158 and
http://thedroidnation.com/samsung/galaxy-s2/xxlpq-update-galaxy-s2-android-40-official-update.html

I enable USB debugging mode but when I enter download mode (volume download +menu +power) and press 'volume up' to continue I get A "DEVICE DRIVER SOFTWARE WAS NOT SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED" message in Windows 7 (32 Bit). So now obviously Odin will not work (no port highlighted in yellow).

How do I get this Device Driver installed?? I have googled my butt off for the last hour and found no USB driver for the Galaxy S2. The only download is for Kies?

I only had this device driver issue when I tried to use download mode. Before that if I connected my S2 via USB to my PC it would work 100% and show 'Samsung Galaxy S2'. Now it doesnt even show that anymore. Arrgh.

If you install Kies it will automatically install the Windows drivers. You need to in device manager remove the 'devices' and then you need to disconnect the handset and reconnect. When it asks you to search for the drivers just cancel it as Kies will automatically pick up and install the correct drivers. Can't remember the full list, think there is 2 when you are connected in download mode.
