Good, the world needs good people, but I do question Absa's explanation,

"Absa can confirm an incident involving an ATM occurred at the Absa Oudtshoorn branch on the evening of 19 July 2022. A thorough investigation has revealed that the returned cash was due to an incomplete transaction, rather than an infrastructure malfunction.

"All the notes returned have been recovered and Absa has engaged all the parties involved, including the customer who reported the matter. This is an isolated incident, and we always advise customers when transacting using an ATM to always ensure their transaction is completed fully before walking away," said Malesa.

whose incomplete transaction and did the person walk away whilst doing the transaction?

I thought the limit was 3k, or does ABSA have a higher limit and who would leave an ATM that failed to dispense their 10k?

They don't want to show their own mistakes all over the place.

I once used a cigarette vending machine, only to have it cough up more than a R1000 in notes. I returned it, but that sure looked like a vulnerability with those machines.

I can't tell. I don't withdraw cash, though I do make cash deposits, but that looks like a withdrawal gone awry. I am sure that the limits can be changed, and banks have been pushing people to use ATMs or other markets to withdraw rather than to use tellers. Most wages are still paid in hard cash.

Absa should take note and offer these guys work. Honesty like that is rare these days.

Why would a person walk away like that? In the picture there is even a visible slip. Either the person was inebriated, under duress or oblivious.
Withdrew money about 4 months ago, machine did the usual brrr grrr frmple frmple... nothing

waited a minute, did it again, big song and dance about getting ready to dispense, nothing...

then dead. So i phoned them, they told me to go to the branch, so i did.... Did the atm spew out my R300 afterwards? No idea... But I walked away because the voice on the phone told me to
